HSRP is a proprietary Cisco technology that is (largely) unimplemented
outside of the Cisco world. The IETF standard is VRRP but that *is*
patent encumbered.

I've been led to believe that CARP is not affected by the patent - but
is obviously not particularly inter-operable with routers from the
"big vendors".
