What is a point if both Linux and BSD also has such limit?
Well, not all the world is Linux or BSD. Since beginning, most parts of BIRD avoid any such system dependencies and I still think it's a good idea. Also, it's generally a good practice to avoid arbitrary limits on size of anything, at least as long as it does not make the code unnecessarily complex.
