I've just configured a new peer on our IPv6 implementation of BIRD and, as per the subject, I'm receiving the following error with "sh protocols":
<peer name> BGP T_<peer name> start 18:05 Idle Received: Required capability missing
This is just bird reporting a message sent by the peer. Can you get the peer to check their logs? Do you know what hardware/software the peer is using? cheers Marty

Unless you have some very old version of BIRD, 'Required capability missing' would probably be caused by address family mismatch. Perhaps the other side expects you to support also IPv4? We run into the message, when establishing BGP session with Quagga 0.99.10 Bird log: 25-01-2011 11:45:43 <RMT> R1155x1: Received: Required capability missing: 010400020001 Problem was in client configuration: IPv6 neighbor was added to peer-group outside address-family ipv6.
