Hi all, First, I'm wondering if this is the right place to ask. If not please tell me. I'm new BIRD user, and here my situations: I have Linux boxes (2.2.14) running as a router, have 3 interfaces: eth0, eth1 and eth2 I'd like to use BIRD to automaticaly tell others (machines) how to reach the network behind eth0. My question is how do I make the BIRD and/or Kernel see the route via eth2 instead of eth1. In orther words, I'd like to see the route: 10.12.12.0/24 via 10.218.28.244 dev eth2 NOT 10.12.12.0/24 via 38.218.28.244 dev eth1 <--- unfortunately, this is what I got!!!!!!! :-( Please give advices. memory leak bird

bird 1.0.1 doesn´t do anything

i see bgp packets going in both directions, but there is nothing in the log files, so i guess bird isn´t doing anything excep sending some reply. andreas

please check if it is necessary, before you do the mkdir in the "make install" section. obj/Makefile: install: all $(INSTALL) -d $(sbindir) $(sysconfdir) $(localstatedir) should be: install: all if ! test -d $(sbindir) then $(INSTALL) -d $(sbindir) fi if ! test -d $(sysconfdir) then $(INSTALL) -d $(sysconfdir) fi if ! test -d $(localstatedir) then $(INSTALL) -d $(localstatedir) fi Note: i´m not sure if -d is appropriate. a symlink to a directory should be also allowed, but i don´t know how to test for that. regards, andreas

Another RIP problem...

Its getting late, or rather to say early now, and I am tracing sporadic dials on my setup. What I have seen so far is that they are caused by sporadic loss of the RIP route. Sporadic in this case means always after timeout/garbage timer run. Debug says it kicks the route out because it is too old, and a couple second later it is back in, most likely from the next broadcast. Bird is getting the broadcasts. In "show route", said RIP route has an updated timestamp, and that one gets updated each time a broadcast happens and the bird log says > ignored ... (because its already there). A quick examination of the source shows that in this "ignored" case, the lastmod timestamp gets updated, which is what show route shows. But the route gets cleaned out according to the lastmodX timer, which does not get updated. Is this a bug or is that mandated behaviour (which I doubt, since it is silly & causes routing instability...) ? RIP Metric export to kernel table ?

Hi list, I was just looking for a more configurable RIP engine than routed is, when I came across bird. bird seems fine for all I want to do, except one problem: It does not export the RIP metric of routes it receives to the kernel. Or may be I am just too stupid to do it, given that I couldnt get zebra to do it either. With stock routed it works, however. The application I have for this is a VPN with a dial-on-demand modem backup. In order to make the ppp link being used if its up, I need to control the metrics differently for the links. That works fine with bird filters, and the rip announcements do carry the correct metric (i set it to 5), according to tcpdump. However on the other end, the routes show up with metric 0 in the kernel table, which of course disturbs the settings I planned for it. What am I doing wrong ? Client Documentation

Where might I find some information about the bird client? Scanning the client source code didn't really help and: configure: error: The client requires GNU readline library 2.1 or newer. Either install the library or use --disable-client to compile without the client. makes it difficult to read the on-line docs.
