New in BIRD

Hi, I recently started trying to learn BIRD. I should also mention I have no previous experience with any other Routing daemon either. I want to configure a bgp monitor for both ipv4 and ipv6. I am running BIRD in a Ubuntu 13.10 VM. I managed to install both bird and bird6 but I have some problems with the configurations. In ipv4 : I created a very simple configuration which I attach. The conf is compiled but in birdc the bgp session is considered idle. I tried to do a tcpdump and found that the router sends a TCP SYN on the VM's bgp port but the VM responds with a RST and never tries to set a BGP session itself. In ipv6 : No matter the configuration (my configuration or the sample coming with bird6 or examples found on the web) the configuration is not compiled giving the following error : BIRD ipv6 doesn't run (bird: /usr/local/etc/bird6.conf, line 1: Router ID must be configured manually on IPv6 routers) Could anyone give me some pointers on what I am doing wrong ? OSPF state inconsistency

Dear all, we are using BIRD 1.4.5 with OSPF on PPPoE access servers running FreeBSD 9.3 and mpd 5.7. In order to achieve fail-over, each access server is listening on the same VLANs. The user connects to access server which first responds with PPPoE PADO. Some of our subscribers need additional IPv4 prefix, which is routed via address assigned from pool. Such route is added by mpd on connect and deleted on disconnect or LCP timeout. Unfortunately, we are experiencing OSPF state inconsistency between access servers, when user quickly disconnects from one node and connects to another. Bird as an MPLS RR

Hi guys, I'm following the instructions from http://bird.mpls.in/projects/mpls-bird/wiki/Bird_rr but I get a syntax error when adding the table statements. I'm using Bird 1.4.5 for Ubuntu utopic installed from this ppa: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/cz.nic-labs/bird/ubuntu utopic main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/cz.nic-labs/bird/ubuntu utopic main But it seems that version is not yet compiled for VPNv4 (AFI/SAFI 1/128) capabilities. already checked this link with no luck... https://www.mail-archive.com/bird-users%40atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/msg03141… any ideas? segfault with BFD

Socket error: TCP_MD5SIG: Cannot allocate memory

I have a machine running BIRD 1.4.5, and I'm seeing a lot of these messages when I start it up: 2015-08-24 15:54:26 <ERR> xxxx: Socket error: TCP_MD5SIG: Cannot allocate memory 2015-08-24 15:54:26 <ERR> yyyy: Socket error: TCP_MD5SIG: Cannot allocate memory It also seems like the sessions that report that error do not come up, and show a status of 'Error: Kernel MD5 auth failed'. I'm only trying to configure around 200 BGP sessions here, most of which are advertising a very small number of prefixes. I don't really see any tunable settings here, any suggestions as to how I can correct this?

Route update question

I am using my own protocol and wanted to understand more about handling of route update. When my protocol receives a route, I inform the core using rte_update() and pass on the new route and when I need to delete I set new = NULL and call rte_update(). Problem : 1. This is the initial route that was installed in the table. Route1 10.0.1.0/24 Metric : 10 2. Received a better route with Metric as 5, so i call rte_update and pass on the new route. So now, I have Route1 10.0.1.0/24 Metric: 5 3. Protocol again receives an update to delete the cost 5 route (step 2) . However when I do that, I see that I no longer have any route to 10.0.1.0/24 instead of having a higher cost route (cost 10 ). When I enable debug, I see that during delete, when we fall through rte_recalculate() in core code, net->routes is being set to null and so we never do recalculation for new optimal route. Is there something I need to do after we call rte_update() to install route so I save the old_best route. Thanks, -- Jigar Mehta

bird 1.5.0-4 ospf Inactivity timer expired.

Hello, I have three Ubuntu physical machines with quagga (ospf area0/bgp with full route table on 2-4 uplink) and one whit bird (ospf only). On one of the routers (ospf/bgp) replace quagga on bird. Configuration bird attachment. After replacing the CPU load there is increased by 10-15%. On top Bird periodically consumes up to 90% of the CPU, and at a given time is restarted ospf: Inactivity timer expired for nbr. On one interfaces eth1.2508 to another bird router, I increased the Dead interval to 10 seconds. And it helped. What could be my problem? Large filters BGP, smallest ospf hello/dead interval or something else? OSPF interfaces issue

Hi, I wanted some help regarding a problem I was seeing when i had multiple interfaces with same ip address . I have multiple routing domains setup so i have valid cases to have same ip address on different interfaces (so i have seperate routing tables for each instance). When I do a show ospf interface for each ospf protocol instance, it seems to correctly dump the interface . When I did a packet capture, it shows incoming/outgoing hello packets, but when I enabled debug, i can see that it never prints a "hello packet received" message(but prints "hello packet sent") although, i can see the peer sending ospf hello packets. This seems to be a problem with only one instance and not both. Any help or assistance on this is highly appreciated.
