Hi, I recently started trying to learn BIRD. I should also mention I have no previous experience with any other Routing daemon either. I want to configure a bgp monitor for both ipv4 and ipv6. I am running BIRD in a Ubuntu 13.10 VM. I managed to install both bird and bird6 but I have some problems with the configurations. In ipv4 : I created a very simple configuration which I attach. The conf is compiled but in birdc the bgp session is considered idle. I tried to do a tcpdump and found that the router sends a TCP SYN on the VM's bgp port but the VM responds with a RST and never tries to set a BGP session itself. In ipv6 : No matter the configuration (my configuration or the sample coming with bird6 or examples found on the web) the configuration is not compiled giving the following error : BIRD ipv6 doesn't run (bird: /usr/local/etc/bird6.conf, line 1: Router ID must be configured manually on IPv6 routers) Could anyone give me some pointers on what I am doing wrong ? Release plans?

Hi, I was just wondering if the BIRD team had any plans to do a release any time soon (I think that would be 1.6?). We'd really like to have a release with BGP multi-path support. Regards, -Shaun

[mrtdump branch] Segfault when using a long filename for mrtdump

Hi, I have been experimenting with the mrtdump branch (commit cc4eee62) on Debian jessie. However, when using a moderately long filename, Bird crashes. For instance: birdc6 'mrtdump routes to "/bird/mrtdump/rib.ipv6.20160426.1209"' BIRD 1.5.0 ready. Connection closed by server. The logs are the following: bird6[8314]: Unable to open file "<too-long>" for MRT dump of table master systemd[1]: bird6.service: main process exited, code=killed, status=11/SEGV systemd[1]: Unit bird6.service entered failed state. kernel: bird6[8314]: segfault at 18 ip 00007fb05162a905 sp 00007ffe1194f5a0 error 4 in bird6[7fb051602000+76000] It looks like TM_DATETIME_BUFFER_SIZE, as used in tm_format_datetime(), is really too small (32 bytes). Also, there seems to be an issue with error handling (segfault when tm_format_datetime returns unexpected data). When defining a higher value for TM_DATETIME_BUFFER_SIZE, bird does not crash anymore, but there is certainly a better solution. Thanks, Baptiste

Using BIRD to inject a route into BGP

Mainly for lab experimentation, I would like to be able to dynamically inject several IPv6 routes into BGP. Creating a static route on the Linux running BIRD does not seem to grab the kernel route (even when doing "ip -6 route add ... proto [static|kernel]..." My config has "import all;export all" for kernel & device protocols + "learn on" What am I missing? Is it possible with BIRD without having to configure those routes in protocol static and reload BIRD? (which is a little too heavy for my environment) Thanks in advance -éric

Hi I can’t find information in google/ docs / sources, Is the bird supports rfc 5549 ? If not (I guess it does not), is there any plans to support rfc 5549 in future?

Feature request? Setting bgp_med to IGP metric

Hi all, I am working today to try to have BIRD propagate my calculated IGP metric to an eBGP peer via MED. This is implemented in commercial routers typically with a flag in the BGP configuration (ie. on JunOS you set 'metric-out igp' in the peer configuration), which will propagate to eBGP the calculated IGP metric to the BGP next-hop as MED MED. This allows MED to update dynamically based on changes to the internal path to that exit, and be automatically calculated by the IGP SPF algorithm, assuming you have set your link costs appropriately. My network uses OSPF to propagate interface and loopback routes only, and iBGP for all 'real' routes. While there is a full mesh in iBGP, obviously not all nodes are directly connected, so OSPF costs are used to determine the path to the destination using 'gateway recursive'. The IGP cost may change if e.g. a node goes down, and I would like to facilitate eBGP peers moving their traffic to the optimal node in such cases, as well as leveraging the IGP data to automatically use the correct entry point in the normal case as well. Is there a way to do this in BIRD? I tried a few different parameters that might contain this information, but none were set in an eBGP export filter (igp_metric, preference, ospf_metric1). The only solution I could come up with, even for the normal case, was using a community for 'route learned at', but this requires every router's configuration to include the path cost to every other router, which quickly becomes cumbersome to maintain as the network grows. I think the ideal solution would be to expose the IGP cost in a new attribute (or maybe use igp_metric as it doesn't seem to be set), such that a filter could work with it to set an appropriate bgp_med. Internally it's obviously available, since birdc shows it as part of the preference for BGP routes. I guess the difficulty would be making sure changes propagate through eBGP peerings. Alternatively, a knob could be provided in the peer configuration, perhaps as a special setting for default bgp_med. Or both :). Keenan Tims

limit the output

Hi, is it possible to limit the birdc show route output for a certain protocol? I wrote a script which runs in a specific interval and fetches the received BGP routes. Normally the bgp routing table has thounsands of entries. In order to save some cpu power Bird only needs to show me the first 10,15,20 or 25 routes. In SQL there is a "limit" keyword which would be able to fulfil my desire. So... is there smth similar in bird? Thanks in advance.

iBGP unreachable

Hello, I am new to Bird and I am trying to set up a Looking-Glass. I have configured a iBGP-Session with a route-reflector to gather the needed routes. When I do a "show route". Every route I got via BGP is unreachable. xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/24 unreachable [bgp_v4 13:32:40 from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] * (100/-) [ASxxxxxxi] The Log will give me the following: 2016-04-10 13:32:44 <WARN> Next hop address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx resolvable through recursive route for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/24 When I add a static route via Bird for the unreachable prefix to the next hop the route is resolvable. route xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/32 via xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx A static default gateway won't do the trick (route 0.0.0.0/0 via xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;). the routes are still unreachable. Is there any posibility to solve ths problem without adding an IGP or a static route to every next hop? Best regards, Marius
