Linux PBR and RIP
by Grant Taylor 14 Feb '21

14 Feb '21

Hi, I'm facing a problem where RIP (v2) isn't originating a default route if it's not in the (kernel) table that RIP is using. The system itself is using Policy Based Routing and does have a default route in a different (kernel) table. PBR is searching multiple (kernel) tables in succession. Is there a way that I can have BIRD v2 originate a default route that doesn't exist in the (kernel) table that RIP is connected to? Or am I facing needing another (BIRD) table that has the main kernel table and a static default route piped into so that RIP sees the default that the kernel isn't using? -- Grant. . . . unix || die

[PATCH] BGP: Add support for BGP hostname capability
by Vincent Bernat 10 Feb '21

10 Feb '21

This is an implementation of draft-walton-bgp-hostname-capability-02. It's implemented since quite some time for FRR and in datacenter, this gives a nice output to avoid using IP addresses. Currently, it is always enabled. The hostname is retrieved from uname(2) and not configurable. The domain name is never set nor displayed. I don't think being able to set the hostname is very important. I don't think the domain name is useful. However, maybe the capability should not be enabled by default. Also, the case where the capability is supported but hostname is empty is handled as if the capability was not supported. I think this is not worth handling such an edge case. The RFC doesn't say if hostname is optional or not. The return code of uname(2) is not checked, but I think this is not bound to happen and if it happens, this is handled nicely by disabling the capability. The draft is expired but I hope a second implementation could allow to revive it. Can't connect new router to OSPF
by ico 09 Feb '21

09 Feb '21

Hello, I am reaching to you bird guys, because I run out of ideas, how to make my new router with bird 2.0.7 connect to the rest of OSPF routers. The server is linux, kernel 5.10.12. IP config of interface connected to entwork: $ ip a ls dev eth0 20: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group default qlen 1000 link/ether 38:ea:a7:12:11:f4 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 10.10.4.45/24 scope global eth0 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever This interface is perfectly OK I believe, since I am connecting to the router via this interface. Bird's config (minimal, to show the problem): $ cat /etc/bird/bird.conf log stderr { debug, info, remote, warning, error, auth, fatal, bug }; router id 10.10.4.45; debug protocols all; protocol device { scan time 3; } protocol ospf ospfin { ipv4 { import all; export all; }; tick 2; ecmp no; area 0.0.0.0 { stub no; interface "eth0" { hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; authentication cryptographic; password "somepass"; check link yes; }; }; } I run the bird 2.0.7 like this: $ bird -c /etc/bird/bird.conf -f 2021-02-09 18:11:04.277 <WARN> Missing broadcast address for interface eth0 2021-02-09 18:11:04.277 <WARN> Missing broadcast address for interface eth1 2021-02-09 18:11:04.277 <INFO> Started ...and that's all, no more logs. Interface eth1 is 2nd interface with IP address on router, but not configured in OSPF. In bird console I see this: bird> show ospf neighbors ospfin: Router ID Pri State DTime Interface Router IP 10.10.4.15 1 Init/Other 15.722 eth0 10.10.4.15 10.10.4.12 1 Init/Other 18.014 eth0 10.10.4.12 Other OSPF routers on network 10.10.4.0/24 (12 of them) communicate without problems. Those routers run bird 1.6.x but that shouldn't be a problem, I also have some birds 2.0.7 in other parts of network. On other routers I don's see this one as a neighbor. Once or twice it was ther, but don't know why... In those times I saw this: router 10.10.4.45 unreachable network [10.10.4.1] metric 10 OK. I suspect the problem has something to do with "Missing broadcast address.." messages. Maybe some misconfiguration? Or some obvious error I don't see. Please point me to error I am doing. Thanks ico

by shirenn 08 Feb '21

Hello, I am setting up bird for my AS. I have two routers A and B and my ISP gives me a peer C to do bgp with. The first session initiate without any problem. but when I start the second one, I get the following error : zayo BGP master start 12:44:11 Active Socket: Permission denied debug doesn't give me more information and I couldn't found online what is this error. Could you help me understand it please :) ? And I had another question about router id, in the configuration file, it is said that the router id should be an IPv6. But when I put my IPv6 in it, I get the following error : bird: /etc/bird/bird6.conf:21:11 Router IDs must be entered as hexadecimal numbers or IPv4 addresses in IPv6 version Bests, -- shirenn

Re: [PATCH] BGP: Add support for BGP hostname capability
by Job Snijders 03 Feb '21

Dear Vincent, Thank you for your contribution, running code always is an excellent way to move specifications for the purpose of interopability forward. I'd like to comment on my favorite topic... *** DEFAULTS **** :-) On Wed Feb 3 19:19:50 CET 202, you wrote: > > However, maybe the capability should not be enabled by default. > Indeed, it should absolutely not be enabled by default. Enabling a feature like this would violate the principle of least astonishment! :) Other than POLA, there are few more reasons it probably shouldn't be enabled by default: i recall the draft's supporters alleged this feature is useful in context of 'datacenter networks' (aka, 'non-Internet'?). This to me means that as only a small subset of users care about it, and the onus is on them to enable it if they wish to use this feature. The draft being in draft status, and not (yet?) been adopted by the IETF IDR working group is another reason not to enable it by default. Thirdly, the semantics of the mechanism are not entirely well aligned with the mechanics of a node's hostname. A node's hostname can change (often?) over the lifetime of the node, while signaling the hostname through a BGP capability effectively limits hostname exchange merely to the OPEN event, a single point in time. Lastly, many have argued that this is what we have Reverse DNS for, and then others argued that in ISIS the hostname also is flooded, so why not in BGP... and so on, making it clear there is no consensus what to do next. I recommend adjusting the patch in such a way that the capability is only exchanged with specific neighbors where the capability has been explicitly enabled through neighbor/group specific configuration. Kind regards, Job

Dear We have a installed 2 BIRD RR (10.200.2.125 and 10.200.2.124) just installed to use as reflectors on our network We noticed the client is adding 2 entries to the routing table. Is this normal? BFD not recovering after link recovers
by 0.bgp＠elloe.vision 01 Feb '21

01 Feb '21

We are setting up a container based proof of concept with IPv6 only using ECMP, ANYCAST, BGP with BFP and Bird2 and I've hit a problem where BFD doesn't recover after a local link goes down and comes back and are seeking some advice as whether this is expected behaviour or a bug. We have installed Bird2 into 2 LXC containers both with BFD and BGP enabled talking via IPv6 using ULA. Each container is on a different subnet (fd00::1/112 & fd01::1/112). Each container is connected to a different bridge (lxdbr0 & lxdbr1) and the host has routes to link them together. This works fine! We are now testing what happens when the link is broken in various ways. 1. Deleting a host route - works fine BFP sessions recovers when route is re-added. 2. Link down on the host side veth that is attached to the bridge - BFD fails to recover when link is brought back up. The problem seems to be "bfd1: Socket error: bind: Cannot assign requested address" If on the container we then do "birdc resart bfd1" the link recovers.
