Help: BGP neighbor
by Arvin Gan 04 Dec '18

04 Dec '18

Hello All, I notice that if BGP is directly connected, when BGP started, the bgp_start_locked() is called and using neigh_find2() to lookup the neighbor. In neigh_find2(), bird will loop iface_list and comparing the remote IP address with the IP prefix of interface, checking whether is the subnet. Now, I have a question that why not using route table to find the neighbor ? Since I have one case that make me have some confusion. Test Case: DUT1 DUT2 DUT3 lo interface 2000::1111/128 , interface3 3000:1::8/112 <-----------------------> interface4 3000:1::9/112, lo interface: 2000::2222/128 interface1 2000::2/112 <------>interface2: 2000::1/112 suppose that the route table configuration are all reachable. 1. Anyone known the topology connection is normal or correct ? 2. If yes, when create BGP peer with loopback interface 2000::1111, remote IP 2000::2222. 3. BGP peer will use 2000::2222 to compare with interface prefix list on DUT2, find the neighbor interface2 with prefix 2000::1/112 [interface2 on DUT2], and consider as directly connected. BUT, actually, BGP peer TCP connection is not directly connected, and TCP connection don't using interface2 on DUT2, but using interface3 on DUT2 to connect interface4 of DUT3. Best Regards, Arvin Gan

OSPF in VRF stuck in Alone
by James Oakley 03 Dec '18

I am trying to get OSPF working via OSPF and it looks like BIRD is ignoring OSPF packets coming in on the VRF interfaces. As far as I can tell from the documentation, I have all of the pieces in place, but the protocol is stuck in "Alone". The kernel version is 4.18.12, and I have the "vrf" parameter set on the kernel and ospf protocols. Here is my config: ipv4 table foo_ipv4; protocol kernel kernel_foo { vrf "foo"; kernel table 8194; learn; scan time 10; ipv4 { import all; export all; preference 1100; table foo_ipv4; }; } protocol direct direct_foo { vrf "foo"; ipv4 { table foo_ipv4; }; interface "foo"; interface "vl-foo"; interface "vx-foo"; } protocol ospf ospf_foo { vrf "foo"; router id 100.63.16.4; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "vl-foo"{ cost 10; }; interface "vx-foo" { cost 100; }; }; ipv4 { preference 1000; import all; export all; table foo_ipv4; }; } Here are my interfaces: 21: foo: <NOARP,MASTER,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 65536 qdisc noqueue state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000 link/ether 6a:f0:2c:ae:69:48 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff promiscuity 0 vrf table 8194 addrgenmode eui64 numtxqueues 1 numrxqueues 1 gso_max_size 65536 gso_max_segs 65535 22: vl-foo@host0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue master foo state UP mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000 link/ether 06:d8:07:73:68:b6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff promiscuity 0 vlan protocol 802.1Q id 2018 <REORDER_HDR> vrf_slave table 8194 addrgenmode eui64 numtxqueues 1 numrxqueues 1 gso_max_size 65536 gso_max_segs 65535 23: vx-foo: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1432 qdisc noqueue master foo state UNKNOWN mode DEFAULT group default qlen 1000 link/ether 32:08:91:57:b9:0b brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff promiscuity 0 vxlan id 2 srcport 0 0 dstport 4789 ageing 300 udpcsum noudp6zerocsumtx noudp6zerocsumrx vrf_slave table 8194 addrgenmode eui64 numtxqueues 1 numrxqueues 1 gso_max_size 65536 gso_max_segs 65535 If I debug the protocol, I only see it sending the HELLO packets: >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vl-foo >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vx-foo >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vl-foo >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vl-foo >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vx-foo >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vl-foo >>> ospf_foo: HELLO packet sent via vl-foo However, I am seeing packets from the other router on the interface: # tcpdump -nei vl-foo proto 89 tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode listening on vl-foo, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 262144 bytes 08:17:22.583387 56:0f:a7:16:64:e2 > 01:00:5e:00:00:05, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 82: 100.63.16.1 > 224.0.0.5: OSPFv2, Hello, length 48 08:17:28.364546 06:d8:07:73:68:b6 > 01:00:5e:00:00:05, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 78: 192.168.1.5 > 224.0.0.5: OSPFv2, Hello, length 44 08:17:28.364682 06:d8:07:73:68:b6 > 01:00:5e:00:00:05, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 78: 100.63.16.4 > 224.0.0.5: OSPFv2, Hello, length 44 08:17:32.583848 56:0f:a7:16:64:e2 > 01:00:5e:00:00:05, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 82: 100.63.16.1 > 224.0.0.5: OSPFv2, Hello, length 48 08:17:38.364541 06:d8:07:73:68:b6 > 01:00:5e:00:00:05, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 78: 100.63.16.4 > 224.0.0.5: OSPFv2, Hello, length 44 08:17:38.364645 06:d8:07:73:68:b6 > 01:00:5e:00:00:05, ethertype IPv4 (0x0800), length 78: 192.168.1.5 > 224.0.0.5: OSPFv2, Hello, length 44 Can anybody tell me what I am missing here? -- James Oakley james.oakley(a)multapplied.net

Doubt in file config
by Elder Costa 03 Dec '18

Sorry my english and my nescience with Bird...I'm starting Bird now, and my new job we use it... Analyzing config file stay with doubt in section... protocol static aggregated_nets_v4 { ipv4; route XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/22 reject; route AAA.AAA.AAA.AAA/22 reject; route BBB.BBB.BBB.BBB/22 reject; route CCC.CCC.CCC.CCC/22 reject; } What would be the meaning of block ? Is it creating a static entry and rejecting the routes inside the block? Elder Costa Network Analyst / Analista de Redes

Counting prefered routes for a protocol with bird2
by Alarig Le Lay 29 Nov '18

29 Nov '18

Hi, With bird1, I can know how much routes are used for each protocol just by parsing birdc: [alarig@nominoe ~]$ birdc show protocols all bgp_breizhix | grep 'Routes:' Routes: 75 imported, 0 filtered, 4 exported, 73 preferred With bird2, I don’t see this information: [alarig@budic ~]$ birdc -r show protocols all bgp_breizhix_ipv4 BIRD 2.0.2 ready. Access restricted Name Proto Table State Since Info bgp_breizhix_ipv4 BGP --- up 2018-11-21 Established Description: BreizhIX BGP state: Established Neighbor address: 185.1.89.1 Neighbor AS: 206165 Neighbor ID: 185.1.89.1 Local capabilities Multiprotocol AF announced: ipv4 Route refresh Graceful restart 4-octet AS numbers Enhanced refresh Neighbor capabilities Multiprotocol AF announced: ipv4 Route refresh Graceful restart 4-octet AS numbers Enhanced refresh Session: external AS4 Source address: 185.1.89.13 Hold timer: 216.225/240 Keepalive timer: 12.810/80 Channel ipv4 State: UP Table: master4 Preference: 100 Input filter: bgp_filter_breizhix_in_ipv4 Output filter: (unnamed) Receive limit: 800000 Action: block Export limit: 4 Action: block Routes: 75 imported, 0 filtered, 4 exported Route change stats: received rejected filtered ignored accepted Import updates: 90 0 0 0 90 Import withdraws: 15 0 --- 0 15 Export updates: 5738200 88 5738108 --- 4 Export withdraws: 155358 --- --- --- 0 BGP Next hop: 185.1.89.13 The only way I found is by using 'show route count primary', but it takes so many time: [alarig@nominoe ~]$ time birdc show protocols all bgp_breizhix | grep 'Routes:' | sed -Ee '/preferred/{ s/^.* ([0-9]+) 'preferred'.*$/\1/; p;}' -e d 73 real 0m0.003s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.006s [alarig@budic ~]$ time birdc -r show route count primary table master4 protocol bgp_breizhix_ipv4 | awk '/routes/ { print $1 }' 73 real 0m0.612s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.003s Is there a faster manner to do this? My goal is to adapt https://git.grifon.fr/alarig/munin-bird/src/branch/master/bird_ to bird2. Thanks, -- Alarig

Incomprehensible error concerning identical babel config for bird and bird6 (bird-v1.6.4 on ubuntu18.04.1)
by Christoffer Hansen 17 Nov '18

17 Nov '18

Hi fellow bird users. I have a question concerning the syntax error message shown below for the bird daemon. But NOT for the bird6 daemon. Even thou the configuration snippet in bird.conf & bird6.conf is identical. Any educated guesses as to what might be causing this? cat /etc/bird/bird.conf (...) 36 # babel 37 ######## 38 39 protocol babel { 40 interface "wg-server" { 41 type wireless; 42 }; 43 export where (source = RTS_DEVICE) || (source = RTS_BABEL); 44 } (...) $ bird -p bird: /etc/bird/bird.conf, line 39: syntax error cat /etc/bird/bird6.conf (...) 36 # babel 37 ######## 38 39 protocol babel { 40 interface "wg-server" { 41 type wireless; 42 }; 43 export where (source = RTS_DEVICE) || (source = RTS_BABEL); 44 } (...) $ bird6 -p <<empty_output>> Regards, Christoffer -- Bird user and participant in the DN42 network. --

Detailed view for show ospf lsadb
by Lukas Liebig 16 Nov '18

16 Nov '18

Hello, I'm comparing BIRD with Quagga in order to evaluate if we should switch to BIRD. Therefore, I have two questions: 1) I have attached two screenshots of the LSA databases of BIRD and Quagga. BIRD enables many output filtering features but I always get only a table-like representation of the LSA database. The Quagga shell can also display detailed LSA information, for instance the attached image for a type 5 LSA. Most information can also be found within birdc but the Forward Address for example cannot. Or is there a command in birdc, I did not notice? If not, is it planned to display more detailed LSA information for further BIRD releases? 2) On various websites and presentations people talk about BIRDs better performance and lower resource usage compared with Quagga. Here [1] one can even see diagrams but there is now further information given about the taken measurements. Are there studies which compare BIRD and Quagga in an objective and comprehensible way? Best regards, Lukas Liebig [1]: https://www.uknof.org.uk/uknof15/Preston-Routeserver.pdf

BPG inbound filtering based on origin as-path and communities - configuration review (moving from quagga to bird)
by Shahan Agha 15 Nov '18

15 Nov '18

Hi All, I am working on migrating some systems from quagga to bird and would like to have some details regarding the filtering and how to set this up. Currently we are doing inbound bgp filtering based on as-path access-lists, prefix-lists and communities. Since i dont have much familiarity with Bird and more familiar with Cisco (quagga is quite similar), i would appreciate if the Bird configuration can be reviewed, *Currently on quagga we are doing it the following way: * ! neighbor X.X.X.X route-map route-in in ! route-map route-in permit 10 match as-path as-in set local-preference 99 ip as-path access-list as-in permit _ 1234 _ ip as-path access-list as-in permit _5678_ ! route-map route-in permit 11 match community route-in-direct set local-preference 110 ip community-list standard route-in-direct permit 1010:2020 ! route-map route-in permit 12 match community route-in-eu set local-preference 121 ip community-list standard route-in-eu permit 3030:4040 ip community-list standard route-in-eu permit 5050:6060 ! route-map route-in permit 13 ! *Goals to achieve: * 1. Block my fixed pulic ip address block to be advertised back to me in order to avoid any sort of loops 2. If some traffic is originated from specific origin ASN like in Cisco quagga the expression is _ 1234 _ , set their local preference to 110. This needs to be done for multiple origin ASNs. 3. Route received with one specific community should have its local preference set to 110 4. Set local preference to 99 matching specific set of communities. *Future Bird configuration: * function ebgp_in() prefix set my_public; { #Goal. 1 my_public = [ 12.13.14.0/22+ ]; if net ~ my_public then return false; #Goal. 2 if bgp_path ~ [(= * 1234 * =),(= * 4567 * =) ] bgp_local_pref = 99; } #Goal. 3 if bgp_community ~ [(1010,2020)] then { bgp_local_pref = 110; } #Goal. 4 if bgp_community ~ [(3030,4040),(5050,6060)] then { bgp_local_pref = 121; } return true; } I would really appreciate if bird experts could help me with this. ;) Thanks, Agha
