Appeal for Conservation Donations

Dear Birders, As many of you may know, the 'Champions of the Flyway' is an annual event that takes place in Eilat, Israel. This year the event is on March 28th. The event takes the form of a Big Day - essentially a midnight-to-midnight race to see which team can record the most species over that time. But more importantly, the race is used as a vehicle to raise funds for the protection of important bird migration flyways. Over 25 million birds are illegally slaughtered by hunters and trappers along these routes each year, and the Champions of the Flyway contributes significant funds to projects combating this. This year the anti-hunting projects of BirdLife's affiliate in Turkey, Doga, is the beneficiary. Teams from all over the world gather in Eilat, itself a migration hotspot, to help the conservation of migratory birds. South African teams have participated in this event for the last few years, and have competed incredibly well in the fundraising aspect, especially considering that we compete with much stronger currencies in the dollar, pound, and euro. We have also traditionally competed well on race day, especially considering that many teams are much more familiar with the Palearctic species present there. This year the South African representation takes on a youth flavour. Our team, the Birding Ecotours 'Youth Africa Birders', is made up of John Kinghorn, Werner van der Walt (both Johannesburg), Jessleena Suri, and Andrew de Blocq (both Cape Town). None of us iolder than 25, and we are representing not only our country but also the Youth Africa Birding movement, of which John is the Chairman and Werner is the Vice-chairman. This movement encourages birding as a hobby for the African youth. We are especially motivated to contribute to Doga's work this year, since a central part of their already-successful project is educating the younger Turkish generation about the negative effects of hunting, and to convert them to bird enthusiasts rather than hunters. We have been preparing for months now by studying books on Middle Eastern birds, listening to calls sourced online, and perusing multiple local blogs to make sure we stand the best chance possible of competing on all fronts. We are hoping to show the birding establishment that we youngsters can mix it with the best of them! In addition to competing on race day and in the fundraising competition, we are also aiming to abide by our team slogan and #BringTheGees to Eilat! The success of past South African teams has been primarily because of the support of the birdwatching community. Past responses to calls for funds have been met with overwhelming generosity, and we are hoping that you will support this very important cause again this year. We are aiming to raise €3500 (plus minus $3700) as a team which will go directly to BirdLife International's Turkish affiliate. If you are able to spare some funds you can be assured that this is a very worthwhile cause - no donation is too big or too small! Official donations to the cause go through the JustGiving link on our official team page, which can be found on the event website as well as at the bottom of this email. If you wish to assist us in getting ourselves over there (costs amounting to approximately $1200 pp), then please do feel free to contact us for more information. Even if you are not able to assist us, please feel free to follow us on our social media! We will be posting relevant, informative articles, team profiles, and you will be able to live this incredible experience vicariously through us. :) www.facebook.com/BEyouthafricabirders/ On twitter as @youthafricabirding Official team page www.champions-of-the-flyway.com/youth-africa-birders/ Just giving link : https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/COTF2017-YAB Our sincere thanks in advance to all of you! Hello Mark "!" means that BIRD failed to push the route into the kernel. There are several possible reasons for that: 1) There is already a route for that network 2) Kernel is compiled without multipath support 3) Some next hop of the route is not valid Does it work with unipath next hop on the busybox? Wrong default route announced with OSPF
by Thomas Berger 07 Feb '17

07 Feb '17

Hi all, we have a strange issue with bird and OSPF: We have set up a two redundant firewall clusters, one for external and one for internal routing. The setup is working well, as long as only the active external firewall has bird running. If we start bird on the passive firewall, the wrong Gateway for 0.0.0.0/0 is announced: The passive firewall has no default route in the main table ( until it imports the one from its peer of course) _active firewall ( before and after starting bird on the passive fw)_ bird> show route all 0.0.0.0/0 via 178.19.71.1 on eth1 [kernel1 03:59:51] * (10) Type: inherit unicast univ Kernel.source: 3 Kernel.metric: 4 _internal firewall before the start if the second bird instance_ 0.0.0.0/0 via 10.11.0.1 on fwfwtrans [ppospf 17:39:36] * E2 (150/15/10000) [10.11.0.1] Type: OSPF-E2 unicast univ OSPF.metric1: 15 OSPF.metric2: 10000 OSPF.tag: 0x00000000 OSPF.router_id: 10.11.0.1 _internal firewall after the start if the second bird instance_ 0.0.0.0/0 via 10.11.0.2 on fwfwtrans [ppospf 17:38:03] * E2 (150/15/10000) [10.11.0.1] Type: OSPF-E2 unicast univ OSPF.metric1: 15 OSPF.metric2: 10000 OSPF.tag: 0x00000000 OSPF.router_id: 10.11.0.1 Any idea? -- Thomas Berger BundesIT Piratenpartei Deutschland – Pirate Party of Germany Pflugstraße 9a, D-10115 Berlin, Germany Patrick Schiffer (Vors.), Carsten Sawosch (Stellv. Is it possible to apply filter on OSPF interfaces within the same area?
by Steve Leung 01 Feb '17

01 Feb '17

Hi, Using OSPF, when receiving some routes from a network interface, by default all routes will be re-advertised to other interfaces within the same area without applying the filter rules. Say in the below example. === protocol ospf myospf { table t_ospf; import filter ifilter; export filter ofilter; area 0 { interface "eth*" { hello 10; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 300; cost 10; }; }; } === Routes received from "eth1" will be _forwarded_ to "eth2" and bypassed all the filters. Is it possible to configure bird.conf so only some of the routes will be re-advertised? (aka apply filters to interface within the same OSPF area) Creating multiple ospf instance and treat the routes as "external routes" (so filter will apply) is not a good idea for me because the environment is quite dynamic, may even have hundreds of dynamic virtual interface, and I hope I do not need to edit the config file all the time. Thank you so much for your time. Best regards, Steve

Dear bird user, May be someone could help me to fixe a problem. I use the stormshield firewall on my network. On each router, i have 2 lines ( primary and backup) I want to configure the BGP to have an automatic backup solution between the both lines. The problem is when I activate bird on my firewall, some application going through internet doesn't work anymore ( sftp, pop3s, smtps, some https applications,......) Have somebody meet the same problem ? FIB aggregation
by Andre Nathan 27 Jan '17

27 Jan '17

Hi I was looking for FIB aggregation support in Bird. I managed to find some academic papers on the subject, for things like FIFA [1] and SMALTA [2], and this thread from 5 year ago: http://bird-users.network.narkive.com/Qusamzzd/route-aggregation-in-bird-how Has there been any development in this area for Bird? Cheers, Andre [1] http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/6566913/ [2] https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-uzmi-smalta-01

OSPF on bridged network
by Dean 26 Jan '17

26 Jan '17

Hello, I'm trying to setup OSPF to run between docker containers, and I have connected three containers to a bridge using veth interfaces. However, each container considers itself to be Designated Router for the network, and doesn't even acknowledge the others (none is in the neighbor list). Below is my configuration: log "/bird/rt3/bird.log" all; router id 3; protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol kernel { export all; scan time 15; } protocol ospf { debug all; import all; area 1 { networks { 2001:db9:4::/64; }; interface "v4" { cost 5; type ptp; hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; }; interface "vn3" { priority 3; cost 5; type broadcast; hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; }; }; } The two other containers have the pretty much the same configuration. Only the interface names, priority and router ID is different. Any idea what is going on here? Thank you.
