Consulting

Hi List, Seeing the message of Jeff yesterday and the fact I have been trying to get bird to work for a few days now I am pretty sure I need help from soneone setting up bird. We are basically setting up anycast with a few servers at three locations. The servers will need to speak OSPF to a Juniper router which then redistributes the routes accordingly to the internet. We would like to use bird(6) to do this for a few ips setup at the loopback interface (both IPv4 and IPv6). I managed to get quagga ospfd working just fine, ospf6d not unfortunately. Figured switching to bird would help but I can't get IPv4 ospf in bird working either. I read the manual of bird a few times, top to bottom, googled around but didn't got it to work. The servers are running CentOS 6.3, I have compiled bird & bird6 from source. What i need done is a full config for bird & bird6, I tried almost every setting so I think it is best if someone just creates a config from scratch for us. The setup is quite simple honestly, the routers are running ospf and ospfv3. IPs are assigned to the interfaces and loopback. We don't need ospf authentication but do need the bird config/process secured, logging to syslog and just some prefix filtering on what goes out over OSPF. I have no problem paying for it. Hopefully somebody can help me out here. Thanks a lot! Scott

weird routes apparing in linux cache route table
by Arkadiusz Miśkiewicz 19 Dec '12

19 Dec '12

Hi, Linux 3.0.18 (using multiple routing tables with priorities set via ip rule but that's not relevant here I guess), bird 1.3.8 and weird problem. I have simple bird configuration, only one bgp peer. I'm NOT exporting received routes to kernel: protocol kernel { learn; export none; import all; scan time 15; } Now the problem is that there ARE weird routes (for IP X) are appearing in kernel cache table (and not any other) for routes that are received by bird. The weird routes are appearing when openvpn client connects to the same machine from IP X address. Cached routes are like this: IP_X from My_IP dev eth0 If I disable protocol bgp {} section then the problem goes away. I enable it, "configure" and problem reappears. Why bird has influence on linux kernel cache routing table if export none? No clue. Any ideas? config: router id xxx...; filter bgp_in_net prefix set PS; { accept; } filter bgp_out_net prefix set PS; { PS = [ something/24 ]; if ( net ~ PS ) then accept; reject; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol direct { interface "eth0"; } protocol direct { interface "eth1"; } protocol kernel { learn; export none; import all; scan time 15; } protocol bgp netia { debug { states, events }; description "net"; import filter bgp_in_net; export filter bgp_out_net; local as aaaa; neighbor bbbbbb as cccc; default bgp_local_pref 100; } -- Arkadiusz Miśkiewicz, arekm / maven.pl

Hello bird users! I have a fairly simple ospf setup which i would like to configure using bird. I am sending this message to the list with the hope of finding a bird expert (really just a bird user who knows how to configure ospf) who would be willing to help configure bird for me, in exchange for some $. Please message me off-list and when I have someone for the job I will reply to this message saying that I have found someone. Thank you, -krzee

BFD support.
by c 17 Dec '12

Hello there, I notice several mails in the archive saying that BFD support may work its way into BIRD in the future. Has there been any progress here? I'm willing to try/prove experimental code. Many thanks, CraigT

configure file missing from git repo?
by Job Snijders 15 Dec '12

15 Dec '12

Hi all, Am I missing some step in the make proces? Alice:bird job$ git pull Already up-to-date. Alice:bird job$ head INSTALL How to install BIRD =================== $ ./configure $ make # make install Default location for configuration file is /usr/local/etc/bird.conf and for control socket is /usr/local/var/run/bird.ctl . You can change that by --sysconfdir and --localstatedir configure options. Alice:bird job$ ./configure -bash: ./configure: No such file or directory Alice:bird job$ ls configure* configure.in Alice:bird job$ Kind regards, Job

can't export prefix /19 to ospf but /22 is ok
by Piotr 13 Dec '12

Hi, In bird i have in routing table: 10.10.96.0/22 dev vlan13 [direct1 Nov19] * (240) 10.10.96.0/19 dev vlan14 [static1 09:12] * (200) and i try to export prefix 10.10.96.0/19 to ospf protocol ospf test { import filter ospf_test_import; export filter ospf_test_export; filter ospf_test_export { if net ~ 10.10.96.0/19 then { accept; } else reject; } protocol static { import all; export all; route 10.10.96.0/19 via "vlan304"; #test#not#helped route 10.10.96.0/22 reject; } and on others ospf routers i see only: Extern 10.10.96.0 mask 255.255.252.0 There is some limit in bird or ospf or bird takes just more precise route ? I'm not sure, but for a while, when i started testing this, i saw /19 but it was a night and i was very tired.. thanks for help Peter

BIRD-1.3.8 - show bgp summary command (rcvd/best/export)
by Roman Skopenko 01 Dec '12

01 Dec '12

hi I improved the patch for bgp summary from this maillist to show export prefixes. So, now you can see full BGP peers statistics (may be useful for 0dm1ns and looking glass). example outputs: BIRD 1.3.8 ready. bird> show bgp summary Peer AS Last state change Prfx rcvd/best/export State 1.1.1.1 1212 2012-11-20 05:00:44 428680/420360/14 Established 2.2.2.2 1010 2012-11-20 05:00:44 54560/54086/14 Established 3.3.3.3 50001 2012-11-20 05:00:44 1/1/1 Established 4.4.4.4 40001 2012-11-20 05:00:49 3/3/423843 Established 5.5.5.5 33333 2012-11-20 05:00:43 1/1/1 Established 6.6.6.6 44444 2012-11-20 05:04:51 6/6/418044 Established 7.7.7.7 8764 2012-11-20 05:00:44 2/2/1 Established 9.9.9.9 11111 2012-11-20 05:00:44 1/1/1 Established bird> s b s Uplink1 Peer AS Last state change Prfx rcvd/best/export State 1.1.1.1 1212 2012-11-20 05:00:44 428680/420360/14 Established -- Best wishes

use case suggestion
by Wendler, Daniel 01 Dec '12

01 Dec '12

Hello, maybe someone has an good idea for the following use case: In our setup we have different firewalls configured as an HA-Cluster with heartbeat. On the active firewall we running bird and distribute all networks connected to the firewall to our proxies and mailservers. We use this, so the proxies and mailservers knows about new networks which were connected to the firewalls. Wenn an failover happen, all ip-adresses are switched statefull to the other node with the heartbeat mechanism, i have to note that none of the interfaces has self ips. So when the failover happen, we start bird on the failover node with the same configuration and router id. The only problem/drawback with this setup is, when bird starts it removes all routes from the "client" instances (mailserver an proxy) for about 8 to 10 seconds (i think its the time for DR election and routing updates.). Anyone an suggestion how to prevent route deletion and only "update" routes (or only deletes one when there is no interface or something). Maybe there is an similar option like in the kernel protocol for don't remove routes on bird shutdown? Its not such an great problem, but i try to minimize impact on failover. Perhaps there is an other solution how to better setup such an environment? Daniel

Neighbor lost on interface flap
by Simone Morandini 30 Nov '12

30 Nov '12

Hi guys, we use two machines running BIRD v. 1.3.8 as a bgp route-server on our IXP peering lan, and I noticed an apparently strange behavior: we had to reload the switch module on which our route server is connected, but after that, all v4 neighbors were showing "Error: neighbor lost", while all the v6 neighbors were ok. After quitting the daemon and re-starting it, all the v4 bgp peers were up & running. This happened all the times we had to reload the switch module, that is, all the times we "disconnected" the network interface from the peering lan. Any clue on what could be the cause of this? Thanks, Simone. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
