Request for Comments: Filter behavior on undefined values
by Jan Maria Matejka 09 Jan '18

Hello all! There are many cases when the filter reads an undefined route attribute. We have several variants how to behave then, all of them have their pros and cons. The current behavior is inconsistent and sometimes strange. Variants we thought about when an undefined attribute is to be read: 1 the filter fails with an error. 2 the value is set to default (zero or whatever) and then used 3 it is propagated as undefined until any comparison/match happens, then the comparison/match is always false What can happen then? We thought about several use cases. Let's assume there is a route without the ospf_metric1 attribute. A (in config) import where ospf_metric1 > 10; B (in config) import where ! (ospf_metric1 > 10); C (in config) import where check(); function check() { if ospf_metric1 > 10 then { return true; } else { return false; } }; D (in config) function update() { if defined(ospf_metric1) then { return; } if ospf_metric1 > 10 then { bgp_path.append(myasn); bgp_path.append(myasn); } } E (in cli) show route where ospf_metric1 > 10 F (in cli) show route where ! (ospf_metric1 > 10) We think generally that: Variant 1 may work in config as the admin shall write the filters correctly but it is too strict when it comes to CLI ad-hoc filters. Variant 2 is used now for BGP communities lists where the default is empty list. In other cases, the behavior is undefined. It is convenient as far as the default fits your purposes. Then it becomes almost the same as variant 1. Variant 3 is simple and convenient until you negate the condition. Note that the following two lines would do different things: where bgp_med != 201 where !(bgp_med = 201) We do not know which variant of filters behaviour is the best. We'd like you to think about your use cases for Bird's filters and contribute to this thread with your opinion. Also feel free to suggest other behavior variants if you think out some. Thank you! Maria

Hello, I have FreeBSD XXX 11.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE #0 r321309: Fri Jul 21 02:08:28 UTC 2017 root@releng2.nyi.freebsd.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC amd64 I installed these packages: hs-readline gauche-readline But I cant compile bird-2.0.0: checking for library containing tgetent... -ltinfo checking for readline/readline.h... no configure: error: The client requires GNU Readline library. Either install the library or use --disable-client to compile without the client. # find / -name "readline.h" /usr/include/edit/readline/readline.h /usr/local/include/editline/readline.h /usr/local/include/readline/readline.h Could you help me please? System freezes with Bird running on FreeBSD 11.1
by Clistenes Viana 08 Jan '18

08 Jan '18

Hello Guys, Let me do a question about bird 1.6.3 to see if you can help me on this, we are trying to running it in a server with freebsd 11.1, but the system freeze every 20 seconds, looking for the logs we found some I/O loop cycle messages like this: Jan 2 14:03:15 tau bird: I/O loop cycle took 12509 ms for 8 events We think that the problem can be have a relationship to the Kernel protocol, when the scan run every 20 seconds to the search for changes and insert in the table, we know that this time can be manipulated by the flag scan time, but it will just to delay the problem and not solves that. Enabling or not the learn flag also is not making difference to solve the problem. Any help will be really appreciated. My best Regards, Clistenes Viana Network Engineer Vianet Telecomunicacoes e Internet Ltda

BGP_Next_Hop link local
by Claude Tompers 02 Jan '18

02 Jan '18

Hello, I'm trying to build a setup which includes changing the bgp_next_hop of the bgp announcements. In IPv6 I would like to include both global and link local addresses of the changed next hop, however I'm struggeling with the format. Is this possible ? If so, what would be the correct syntax ? i.e. bgp_next_hop = "global_addr ll_addr"; failed. Thank you. kind regards, -- Claude Tompers Chief Network Officer LU-CIX Management GIE 4, rue A. Reacting to Link Failure
by Liam Kelly 28 Dec '17

28 Dec '17

Is there any way for other programs to listen for Bird events regarding Link Failure (IE: OSPF/BFD dead neighbor)? Bird is great, but the modems and device drivers I am working with are not. I can get some pretty odd ‘zombie’ states on network interfaces, and the BFD session going down is often the best indicator something bad happened. I was hoping to get that information from bird and take actions to fix it. -Liam Kelly

Hi Bird experts, First of all I would thank you for supporting me in installation of BIRD in linux. Now I am trying to acess bgp configuration and its verification after enable in bgp in "bird.conf". I am getting syntax error as attached. Please guide me what to do in order to get the acess of BGP in BIRD. One BGP session flapping but not the other
by Alarig Le Lay 23 Dec '17

23 Dec '17

Hi, I have a pretty simple design: two edge routers, one hypevisor. The routing is done with the help of BGP. regis is the hypervisor. +---------+ +-------+ | nominoe | | budic | +---------+ +-------+ \ / \ / \ / AS204092 --------\-------/--------- \ / AS65000 +-------+ | regis | +-------+ The IPv4 session between nominoe and regis is flapping, but not the one with budic. The IPv6 sessions are stables. nominoe and budic are FreeBSD 11.1-RELEASE boxes, running bird 1.6.3 regis is a gentoo box running bird 1.6.3 too At each time the session is flapping, I can see 'bird: Kernel dropped some netlink messages, will resync on next scan.' in the logs of regis. What does that mean, and what part of the configuration is acting on it? The sessions are configured the same maner at the edge side: template bgp DOWNSTREAM { export all; import keep filtered; } protocol bgp bgp_alarig from DOWNSTREAM { local as 204092; description "BGP for alarig"; neighbor 89.234.186.100 as 65000; import keep filtered; import filter bgp_filter_customer_alarig_in; } And the same goes for the hypervisor: template bgp UPSTREAM { local as myasn; # Be able to see filtered routes with "sh route filtered" command import keep filtered; # Protect ourselves from massive routes leaks receive limit 700000 action block; # Announce only our IP allocations export where proto = "static_alarig_allocations"; export limit 1 action block; } protocol bgp bgp_nominoe from UPSTREAM { description "nominoe"; neighbor 89.234.186.7 as 204092; # Local address we use to establish the BGP session source address 89.234.186.100; # password='' # Accept all routes from Cogent except bogons and other bad stuff import filter bgp_filter_nominoe_in; } protocol bgp bgp_budic from UPSTREAM { description "nominoe"; neighbor 89.234.186.6 as 204092; # Local address we use to establish the BGP session source address 89.234.186.100; # password='' # Accept all routes from Cogent except bogons and other bad stuff import filter bgp_filter_budic_in; } I can paste the rest of the configuration if you think it’s relevant. Thanks, -- alarig
