Multi core validate ospf
by Fernando Galvão 15 Mar '17

15 Mar '17

Hello guys, I wanted your help to validate if the bird with ospf is running with multi thread. I have a dell r410 server with 2 x56 quad core xeon processors totaling 16 cores. This server was serving pppoe server with accel-ppp + quagga ospf v4 / v6 with route summarization. With 2,000 sessions and going on around 1GB, the quagga process blew the cpu and all sessions were disconnected. The problem is that the quagga is single core so it uses only one core. Looking, I've seen that the bird is multi-core. I started to run, I have 2,200 pppoe sessions but still early to get high traffic, I'm passing 300MB and the bird has peaks in a 25% core. I would like to know if I have validate that it is distributing the process between CPUs? Or if you have any configuration for this. Fernando Galvão Wantel Telecom +55 87 3866-5200

Some autoconf cleanups
by Ruben Kerkhof 14 Mar '17

14 Mar '17

The goal of this series is to make it possible to run autoreconf on a git checkout. It does this by moving configure.in to configure.ac and fixes deprecation warnings and errors generated by autoheader. I have some follow up patches with more cleanups, but this series is already large enough as it is.

[PATCH,RFC 0/3] Secondary remote AS support for protocol BGP.
by Lennert Buytenhek 14 Mar '17

14 Mar '17

Hi! These patches implement a way of simplifying BGP topology migrations that involve changing AS numbers on one or both ends of BGP sessions. The first patch allows a BGP peer to connect to us using either of two different AS numbers specified in our local config. (See the commit message for that patch for more details.) The second patch fixes what I think is a reconfiguration bug for protocol BGP and is in the stack mainly because of patch three. The third patch avoids bouncing a BGP session when reconfiguring its BGP protocol if all we're changing is adding a secondary remote AS to the protocol or changing one of two remote AS numbers that is not currently being advertised by the peer. (Again, see the commit message for that patch for more details.) Any feedback appreciated! And even if you happen not to like patch 3, I hope that you'd still be willing to consider patch 1 (and 2). Cheers, Lennert

[PATCH] Allow address scopes for non-link-local addresses
by Fritz Grimpen 14 Mar '17

14 Mar '17

Hi. Here is a small patch which allows non-zero address scopes on non-link-local addresses. This is required to create connections inside a VRF domain, as the Linux kernel documentation states. In combination with multiple RIBs and FIBs, this makes Bird completely VRF-capable. Therefore, this patch is neccessary to integrate Bird in non-trivial routing setups without the use of multiple network namespaces. It would be nice when you accept this patch. Kind regards, Fritz Grimpen

bgp proto bug with add paths in bird 1.6.3
by Lennert Buytenhek 11 Mar '17

11 Mar '17

Hi! bgp_init() in proto/bgp/bgp.c does: P->accept_ra_types = c->secondary ? RA_ACCEPTED : RA_OPTIMAL; and then bgp_rx_open() in proto/bgp/packets.c does: if (p->add_path_tx) p->p.accept_ra_types = RA_ANY; As bgp_init() seems to only be called at configuration time, this means that if you have add path tx, and you have a peer that advertises rx add path and then reconnects without advertising rx add path, you will still have RA_ANY set on the sending side and not have the correct behavior of only sending the optimal route. (This is easy to verify.) Not entirely sure how you'd want to fix this, but perhaps replicating the RA_ACCEPTED / RA_OPTIONAL assignment in bgp_rx_open() (or just moving it there) would do the trick? Cheers, Lennert

Hardware requirements for BIRD
by Clément Guivy 11 Mar '17

11 Mar '17

Hello, I am considering the setup of BIRD as a router to handle our internet traffic. One information I fail to find is hardware requirements. My use case is as follows : - Two transit providers, each sending a full internet view - Two peerings on an IXP (less than 100k routes each) - One iBGP session between the two BIRD routers - One eBGP session to our internal network (advertising a default route and receiving less than 500 internal routes) - Traffic would be less than 1Gbps but as I understand it, this is relevant to forwarding plane and therefore out of the scope of BIRD. Which kind of hardware would be fit for that ? especially regarding CPU and RAM. I was considering an entry-level server with low-end Xeon CPU (E5-2603, 1.7Ghz 6 cores) and 8GB RAM, does that look sufficient, insufficient, or overkill ? I cant really tell. By the way, is BIRD able to use multiple cores ? and are there hardware requirements to be careful of, disregard CPU and RAM ? Thanks. Regards, Clément Guivy

Foster one BGP peer in case of AS path equality
by Alarig Le Lay 09 Mar '17

09 Mar '17

Hi, I have an AS (204092) with two upstreams (174 and 198507). On some cases, the AS path is the same on both peers. I would like to use 198507 over 174 only in this situation (so, no localpref). If I read the documentation correctly, I have take of « Prefer routes with lower internal distance to a boundary router. ». But I don’t see where I can set this internal distance. Does anybody have any clue about that? Thanks, -- alarig

RIP with passive option
by Alexander Festl 09 Mar '17

09 Mar '17

Hi, this is my first post in a mailing list. I hope I do it fine. My server should receive routes via RIP. I have tried it on Ubuntu 10.04 with bird from *ppa:cz.nic-labs/bird* . The server should work with the interface option passive. (Receive routes and do not send) My config file looks like: protocol kernel { persist; scan time 20; export all; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol rip { export none; import all; interface "eth0" { passive yes; }; debug all; } If I start bird, I get bird: /etc/bird.conf, line 15: syntax error I tried "yes", "true" and "" as switch for the passive option. I posted the question at stackexchange too. ( http://networkengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/39548/bird-rip-routes… ) Thank you in advance. Alexander Festl
