Bird in a DHCPv6 Prefix delegation setup?
by yanosz 28 Mar '16

28 Mar '16

Hei folks, I thinking of playing around with dhcpv6-prefix delegation and bird. However, atm I don't see how to match bird and dibbler. Assuming, that dibbler hands out a prefix to a link local address - bird has to be made aware of this routing information. Do you have any experiences here? What's the usual way for connecting dibbler and bird? Thanks, yanosz

Possibility of adding bgpsec code to the BIRD repo.
by Michael Baer 23 Mar '16

23 Mar '16

I had a question for the development team. My group, and me specifically, have been working on adding BGPsec support into the BIRD code base. We initially hoped to have it merged into the standard BIRD repository and are getting to the point when that would be appropriate. The main question I have is, are you interested in looking at and/or merging the code into your repo, optimally sometime in the next 2-3 months? As background, the current version is built on the BIRD 1.4.5 code base and the BGPsec code can be included, or not, at build time. A slightly older version of the code is available at: http://bgpsec.tislabs.com/. There is still some final updates to the protocol being completed at the IETF. I would want to update the code to that version of the protocol (which is very likely the final version) as well as merge it with the 1.5 code base over the next month or two. -Mike -- Michael Baer PARSONS baerm(a)tislabs.com

Bug: mrtdump file descriptor remains open after reload
by yanosz 23 Mar '16

23 Mar '16

Hei folks, I tried to rotate my mrtdump-files by reloading the configuration. Procedure: 1. Configuration file: mrtdump "/tmp/mrtdump.0"; 2. Start bird 3. Change configuration to mrtdump "/tmp/mrtdump.1"; 4. Open birdc6 - execute: configure /etc/bird/bird6.conf Result: Two file descriptors are open: # lsof | grep mrtdump bird6 28752 bird 7w REG 254,1 9616 262557 /tmp/mrtdump.0 bird6 28752 bird 60w REG 254,1 0 266602 /tmp/mrtdump.1 Looking at the source, I don't see any call to fclose, that could have been triggered. bird-1.5.0 ipv4 segfaults on configure - is it safe to change bgp protocol names runtime?
by Bartosz Radwan 22 Mar '16

22 Mar '16

Hi bird users, General question is: is it safe to change bgp protocol name runtime? We're running two instances of bird 1.5.0 on PLD Linux boxes. several days we've upgraded our two routers to 1.5.0 and made some changes in our configuration. There were no problems for about a week. We've decided to tidy up our bgp protocol names (few of them), and the problem occurred on both instances. First instance just after configure: bird[30925]: segfault at 31 ip 000000000040e5d9 sp 00007fffac0862f8 error 6 in bird[400000+64000] Then, on the other instance, ~15 hours after configure: bird[27708]: segfault at 41 ip 000000000040e5c3 sp 00007fff39e55a38 error 6 in bird[400000+64000] I can reproduce error that occurs at configure time in local envoroment, hovever there's no any established sessions at all in ths env, not sure if errors are the same. Here's backtrace: bird: F_1_0901_NEW_NAME: Initializing bird: F_1_0901_NEW_NAME: Starting bird: F_1_0901_NEW_NAME: State changed to start bird: F_1_0901_OLD_NAME: State changed to down Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x0000000000455bfb in ?? Multiple Radv Protocols?
by Matthias Peter Walther 21 Mar '16

21 Mar '16

Hello, we have a setup here where we want to accounce different ipv6 prefixes on different interfaces. We tried it this way: protocol radv 'radvd_bat09' { interface "bat09" { max ra interval 20; link mtu 1280; prefix 2a03:2260:115:900::/64 { }; }; rdnss { ns 2a03:2260:115:900::2; }; }; protocol radv 'radvd_bat10' { interface "bat10" { max ra interval 20; link mtu 1280; prefix 2a03:2260:115:1000::/64 { }; }; rdnss { ns 2a03:2260:115:1000::3; }; }; Bird6 detects both protocols and lists them in show protocols, but it doesn't work. Clients on bat10 don't get a prefix. Another way might be to user the interface block multiple times in one radv protocol which is indeed possible. But how can I announce different dns servers for the different interfaces (like in the example above)? Does bird6 support multiple radv blocks or not? Regards, Matthias

LSA ID Collision help
by Jigar Mehta 21 Mar '16

21 Mar '16

Hi , I am using bird 1.5.0 and running OSPF along with a custom protocol which learns all routes and redistributes its routes into OSPF (import all/export all). When I restart OSPF and my protocol, I see a few times LSA ID collisions. I even tried this scenario to see the outcome : (linux box running OSPF and peering with a router where BGP routes are redistributed into OSPF). OSPF(bird) <-----------------> OSPF/BGP (router) I could see a lot of LSA ID collision messages in log. I tried to debug this and realized that in some cases, the hash entry (en->nf) is NULL and we throw a LSA ID collision error. In a different scenario, I saw that the en->nf.fn was not freed from the earlier hash entry (when I print out the prefix and prefix length it is completely different than the lsa->nf.fn which results in the same error. I cannot recreate this scenario at will but had some success when restarting protocols or rebooting the linux box or feeding 1000+ routes (to BGP and redistribute to OSPF in router) to the setup mentioned above. My IP address space was not overlapping either, so the LSA ID generated would have been unique. Also, I noticed that if I insert overlapping addresses in my protocol and redistribute to OSPF , I see LSA ID collisions (bug ?) Eg: 2016-03-17 16:29:21 <ERR> ospf_0: LSA ID collision for 10.0.192.127/32 2016-03-17 16:30:31 <ERR> ospf_0: LSA ID collision for 10.0.192.0/25 I tried to look around but could not track why we would have this problem. Any suggestions or input is appreciated. Problems adding another router to OSPF
by ico 19 Mar '16

19 Mar '16

Hello, I'm writing this mail to get some help debugging some bird issues. Our OSPF network consists of 14 linux routers running bird, until now I didn't see any problem. Now I wanted to 15th router, but I was unable to do so. I'll try to describe the problem: Let's talk about routers rA, rB, and rC: rA: - running bird - NIC eth0A: part of OSPF, 11 neighbors (and the rest of OSPF) - NIC eth1A: part of OSPF, 1 neighbor - rB - some other stub NICs rB: - running bird - NIC eth0B: part of OSPF, 1 neighbor - rA - NIC eth1B: not part of OSPF, rC and some other routers here - some other stub NICs rC: - not running bird - NIC eth0C: not part of OSPF, rB and some other routers here - some other stub NICs Currently all routes via rC are static on rB. All these routers are exported to the rest of OSPF, soo rA (and others) know about all these routes. No problem here. I want to add rC into OSPF. rC and rB are neighbors, so I should start bird on rC, configure rB and rC to talk to each other. rC should tell all it's routes to the rest of the OSPF, so I can remove static routes on rB (routes via rC). It looks simple. My problem is this: When bird on rB and rC start to talk to each other, rB learns all routes from rC (this is expected). But something between rB and rA is wrong, becouse rA un-learns all new routes from rC. If I don't remove static routes on rB, bird on rB knows about both statically configured routes via rC and routes learned from rC via OSPF. If I remove static routes on rB, bird on rB knows only about routes learned from rC. That is normal. What is wrong - in both cases rA drops these new routes rB learns from rC. If I stop bird or rC, all static routes from rB (if not manually removed) are again re-learned on rA. Question #1: Where could be a problem? Why rA doesn't want routes from rC? Question #2: What is the best way to debug this? Thank you. ico ################################################## # BEGIN bird.conf @ host A log stderr all; debug protocols all; router id rA; protocol device { ... } protocol static { ... }; protocol kernel { learn on; persist; scan time 3; import filter { if 0.0.0.0/0 = net then reject; accept; }; export all; debug { states, routes, filters, interfaces }; } protocol ospf { debug { states, routes, filters, interfaces, events }; tick 2; rfc1583compat yes; import all; export all; area 0.0.0.0 { stub no; interface "eth0A" { hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; type nonbroadcast; check link yes; authentication cryptographic; password "pass"; neighbors { ... }; }; interface "eth1A" { hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; type nonbroadcast; check link yes; authentication cryptographic; password "pass"; neighbors { rB eligible; }; }; interface "eth2A" { stub yes; } ... }; }; # END bird.conf @ host A ################################################## # BEGIN bird.conf @ host B log stderr all; debug protocols all; router id rB; protocol device { ... } protocol static { ... }; protocol kernel { learn on; persist; scan time 3; import filter { if 0.0.0.0/0 = net then reject; accept; }; export all; debug { states, routes, filters, interfaces }; } protocol ospf { debug { states, routes, filters, interfaces, events }; tick 2; rfc1583compat yes; import all; export all; area 0.0.0.0 { stub no; interface "eth0B" { hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; type nonbroadcast; check link yes; authentication cryptographic; password "pass"; neighbors { rA eligible; }; }; interface "eth1B" { hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; type nonbroadcast; check link yes; authentication cryptographic; password "pass"; neighbors { rC eligible; }; }; interface "eth2B" { stub yes; } ... }; }; # END bird.conf @ host B ################################################## # BEGIN bird.conf @ host C log stderr all; debug protocols all; router id rC; protocol device { ... } protocol static { ... }; protocol kernel { learn on; persist; scan time 3; import filter { if 0.0.0.0/0 = net then reject; accept; }; export all; debug { states, routes, filters, interfaces }; } protocol ospf { debug { states, routes, filters, interfaces, events }; tick 2; rfc1583compat yes; import all; export all; area 0.0.0.0 { stub no; interface "eth0C" { hello 5; retransmit 2; wait 10; dead 20; type nonbroadcast; check link yes; authentication cryptographic; password "pass"; neighbors { rA eligible; }; }; interface "eth1C" { stub yes; } ... }; }; # END bird.conf @ host C

bird bgp export to certain ASN instead of all
by Steve SY Fan 16 Mar '16

16 Mar '16

Dear All I am a newbie of bird user. I am running bird version 1.4.5 on my centos box. Now We are struggling with the BGP export filter, as the purpose we are willing to import certain ASN's prefixes in to our table ( e.g google asn 15169 ), and also only export our prefix to certain ASN. in this case, some prefixes will be always routed through one up link. We are done with the import filter to select the incoming routes, but we are failed with export filter, seems nothing happen on the export filter. This is my configuration. log stderr all; log "/var/log/bird.log" all; router id 172.16.120.41; table bird_k150; table bird_k151 protocol kernel kernel150{ persist; scan time 20; export all; table bird_k150; kernel table 150; } protocol kernel kernel151{ persist; scan time 20; export all; table bird_k151; kernel table 151; } protocol kernel { persist; scan time 20; export all; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol static static_bgp_null{ table bird_k151; route a.b.c.0/24 blackhole; } protocol pipe pipe_n_he{ peer table bird_k151; export filter {if source=RTS_OSPF_EXT2 && net=65.19.175.17/32 || net=61.14.134.86/32 then accept; reject;}; import none; protocol ospf hyospf{ rfc1583compat yes; export none; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "eth*" { }; }; } protocol bgp bgp_he_net{ description "he.net uplink"; local 10.96.254.34 as 133194; neighbor 65.19.175.17 as 6939; multihop 4; import all; table bird_k151; next hop self; export filter { if net~103.254.196.0/24 then { bgp_path.prepend(133194); bgp_path.prepend(133194); accept; } reject; }; } protocol bgp bgp_telstra{ description "telstra uplink"; local 202.147.20.169 as 133194; neighbor 61.14.134.86 as 10026; multihop 3; import filter { if bgp_path.last ~ [ 15169, 8075, 8001 ] then { bgp_local_pref=180; accept; } reject; }; table bird_k151; next hop self; export filter { if ( source = RTS_STATIC && net ~ 103.254.196.0/24 ) then { if ! Thanks !

bird ospf mtu problem and negotiation freezes on EXSTART/BDR state

Dear All, As a new user trying to implement bird version 1.5 into some lab environment, I’ve made my first easy setup: Cisco ASR box ( with many VRFs ) <----> FreeBSD with Bird installed ( with many FIBS ). I’m trying to peer one of cisco vrf with one of the fib using OSPFv2. On Cisco side my config looks like: interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1/9 description -=- GSS server -=- mtu 9014 negotiation auto load-interval 30 ! interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1/9.1501 description -=- to-testbed-server-radius -=- mtu 1514 vrf Corp1 ipv4 address 10.98.251.245 255.255.255.252 encapsulation dot1q 1501 ! router ospf Corp_Clients vrf Corp1 area 0 ! interface GigabitEthernet0/0/1/9.1501 mtu-ignore enable ! ! ! ! On FreeBSD side my bird.conf contains: #log syslog { debug, trace, info, remote, warning, error, auth, fatal, bug }; log syslog all; log stderr all; #debug protocols all; timeformat base iso long; timeformat log iso long; timeformat protocol iso long; timeformat route iso long; log "/var/log/bird.log" all; log stderr all; filter import_OSPF { if ( source = RTS_OSPF && net != 0.0.0.0/0 ) then { print "net accepted:", net; accept; } reject; } filter export_OSPF { if ( source = RTS_DEVICE ) then { print "net accepted:", net; ospf_metric2 = 20; accept; } if ( source = RTS_STATIC_DEVICE && net = 0.0.0.0/0 ) then { print"net accepted:", net; ospf_metric2 = 5; accept; } reject; } filter ospf_i { accept;} filter ospf_e { accept;} router id 10.96.91.12; table fib0; table fib1; table fib2; table fib3; table fib4; debug protocols all; protocol direct { # interface "-lo*", "*"; # Restrict network interfaces it works with } protocol kernel kernel_fib0 { table fib0; scan time 20; import all; export all; kernel table 0; learn; persist; } protocol kernel kernel_fib1 { table fib1; scan time 20; import all; export all; kernel table 1; learn; persist; } protocol kernel kernel_fib2 { table fib2; scan time 20; import all; export all; kernel table 2; learn; persist; } protocol kernel kernel_fib3 { table fib3; scan time 20; import all; export all; kernel table 3; learn; persist; } protocol kernel kernel_fib4 { table fib4; scan time 20; import all; export all; kernel table 4; learn; persist; } protocol device { scan time 10; # Scan interfaces every 10 seconds primary "vlan1501" 10.98.251.246; } protocol static static_fib0 { table fib0; # route 0.0.0.0/0 via 10.96.91.1; import all; } protocol static static_fib1 { table fib1; import all; export all; } protocol static static_fib2 { table fib2; import all; } protocol static static_fib3 { table fib3; import all; } protocol static static_fib4 { table fib4; import all; } protocol ospf Corp_Clients { tick 2; rfc1583compat no; debug all; # export filter export_OSPF; # import filter import_OSPF; import filter ospf_i; # import to kernel export filter ospf_e; # export from kernel table fib1; ecmp yes; area 0.0.0.0 { stub no; interface "vlan1501" { type broadcast; tx length 1468; # real broadcast yes; }; interface "lo1501" { }; }; }; Currently on cisco asr the session freezes on EXSTART/BDR state * Indicates MADJ interface # Indicates Neighbor awaiting BFD session up Neighbors for OSPF Corp_Clients, VRF Corp1 Neighbor ID Pri State Dead Time Address Interface 10.96.91.12 1 EXSTART/BDR 00:00:31 10.98.251.246 GigabitEthernet0/0/1/9.1501 Neighbor is up for 00:00:28 Total neighbor count: 1 root@testbed-server:~ # birdc show int BIRD 1.5.0 ready. bce0 DOWN (index=1) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=1500 bce1 DOWN (index=2) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=9000 lo0 up (index=3) MultiAccess AdminUp LinkUp Loopback Ignored MTU=16384 127.0.0.1/8 (Primary, scope host) vlan1777 DOWN (index=4) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminDown LinkUp MTU=1500 vlan306 up (index=5) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=1500 10.96.91.12/24 (Primary, scope site) vlan4094 up (index=6) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=9000 192.168.192.1/24 (Primary, scope site) vlan4093 up (index=7) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=9000 192.168.255.16/28 (Primary, scope site) vlan4092 DOWN (index=8) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=9000 vlan1501 up (index=9) MultiAccess Broadcast Multicast AdminUp LinkUp MTU=1500 10.98.251.246/30 (Primary, opposite 10.98.251.245, scope site) lo1501 up (index=10) MultiAccess AdminUp LinkUp Loopback Ignored MTU=16384 192.168.15.1/32 (Primary, scope site) root@testbed-server:~ # birdc show ospf int BIRD 1.5.0 ready. [PATCH v2 0/2] Add the Babel routing protocol to Bird
by Toke Høiland-Jørgensen 14 Mar '16

14 Mar '16

This is the updated patch to add the Babel protocol to Bird. It is updated quite a bit compared to the previous version. Specifically: - Split up wire serialisation/deserialisation into a separate part from the semantic handling of TLVs. There's now a separate internal representation of the TLVs in host byte order. These are queued for handling and transmission and only serialised/deserialised at read/write from the wire. The get/put functions from unaligned.h are used to ensure alignment. - Reworked handling of route propagation to the core. Babel now keeps separate selected_in and selected_out entries for each prefix and lets the core pick which route to propagate out. - IPv4 routes are explicitly ignored in the handler instead of the parser. - Entries are timestamped and triggered updates only propagate changed entries. - TX failures are handled and transmission of the TLV queue is resumed when the socket is ready to transmit again. - Added reconfiguration support and cli show* support (based on the rip-new RIP implementation). - Added documentation of more functions and user-facing documentation. - The code has been rearranged to have packet handling code in packet.c and the semantic handlers in babel.c. Also, a bunch of code style changes and other adjustments based on the detailed comments from the last submission. I split this up in two commits, where the first one adds formatting of 64-bit router IDs to bvnsprintf() (which is technically a stand-alone change) and the other adds the Babel protocol. Toke Høiland-Jørgensen (2): Teach bvsnprintf() to print 64-bit router IDs.
