Hey Ondrej, could you add some examples how to access to the /var/run/bird.ctl socket via perl at the wiki? Thanks in advance.

BIRD crashes with 1000 peers
by Daniel Seidenstücker 11 Mar '16

11 Mar '16

Dear BIRD community, I want to connect BIRD 1.5.0 with more than 1000 ExaBGP peers on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64 Bit. Connecting 1000 peers works but if I increase the peer count to more than 1024 it fails due to the soft file limit of 1024. To raise that I tried the usual (ulimit, /etc/security/limits.conf) but BIRD doesnt take these new limits. Later I found the advice to add ulimit -n 10000 to the init.d script before each start-stop-daemon command. After restarting BIRD it gets the correct soft and hard limits (cat /proc/<pid>/limits | grep files). But now only 750 peers work and connecting 1000 peers crashs bird without any error message in syslog (log syslog all configured). (I did not test 751-999 peers.) It would be nice if somebody could help meJ. Thanks, Daniel Seidenstuecker

RFC 5549 (Advertising IPv4 Network Layer Reachability Information with an IPv6 Next Hop) support
by Stefan Plug 07 Mar '16

07 Mar '16

Hi guys, Do you know if there are any plans for implementing RFC 5549 for BGP somewhere in the future? This would make it possible to advertise IPv4 networks using IPv6 next hops directly which might come in handy in an IPv4 deprived world. I realize a /30 is a "normal" two-host network with /31 being somewhat of a special case, but I want to make sure this is still expected behaviour for BIRD. -- Patrik Lundin

Static routes
by Support of the day 23 Feb '16

23 Feb '16

Hi, this is my first post to this list, so i hope to meet the rules here. We have two BIRDs acting as BGP-router, running since more than four years without any trouble. Now we wanted to define some static routes with route yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy/32 via xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx; We reload bird and the routes can be seen with netstat -r. First question (just for learning) is: when we want to delete one of this static routes with a "#" at the beginning of the lines and reload bird, we still see this route. So what is the right way to delete a static route? Second question: the described issue was some weeks ago. This week we had to define some static routes, similar to the ones above. But this time it is not working, we cannot see the routes. And: /etc/init.d/bird restart * Restarting Internet routing daemon bird bird: sk_open_unix: bind: Address already in use bird: Unable to create control socket /var/run/bird.ctl [fail] This message is on both routers. Perhaps this is the result of a syntax-problem in our both confs? Dirk

BFD timeouts when trunk had load
by Steve Atkinson 22 Feb '16

22 Feb '16

Hi, We are seeing problems with BFD timeouts when we begin to load gigabit uplinks from our bird router (acting as a CE) when start to load the gigabit pipes to the PE routers. We are using the BFD controlled static routes, which was built into the trunk, and we ported to our card around Oct 2015. Has anyone else had problems ? OSPF state inconsistency
by Przemyslaw Frasunek 21 Feb '16

21 Feb '16

Dear all, we are using BIRD 1.4.5 with OSPF on PPPoE access servers running FreeBSD 9.3 and mpd 5.7. In order to achieve fail-over, each access server is listening on the same VLANs. The user connects to access server which first responds with PPPoE PADO. Some of our subscribers need additional IPv4 prefix, which is routed via address assigned from pool. Such route is added by mpd on connect and deleted on disconnect or LCP timeout. Unfortunately, we are experiencing OSPF state inconsistency between access servers, when user quickly disconnects from one node and connects to another. This is such example, which caused routing loop: (on 193.138.118.89) # birdc show route for 46.21.220.80/28 BIRD 1.4.5 ready. 46.21.220.80/28 via 193.138.118.90 on vlan0 [ospf1 13:08:12] * E2 (10/10/10000) [193.138.118.90] (on 193.138.118.90) # birdc show route for 46.21.220.80/28 BIRD 1.4.5 ready. 46.21.220.80/28 via 193.138.118.89 on vlan0 [ospf1 13:12:32] * E2 (10/10/10000) [193.138.118.89] Any ideas, how to fix it? This is our bird.conf: log syslog { remote, error, auth, fatal, bug }; router id 193.138.118.90; protocol kernel { learn; scan time 20; export filter { if proto = "static_bgp" then reject; accept; }; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol ospf { preference 10; import filter { accept; }; export filter { if net.ip = 0.0.0.0 then reject; if source = RTS_STATIC then accept; if proto = "kernel1" then accept; if proto = "direct1" then accept; reject; }; area 0 { interface "vlan0" { }; interface "vlan*" { stub; }; interface "carp*" { stub; cost 1000; }; }; } protocol direct { import filter { accept; }; };

OSPF default route under special circumstance
by Rohrmann Sascha 18 Feb '16

18 Feb '16

Hi, I have 4 routers: ISP1 ISP2 l l A1 A2 l------------------l B1 B2 A1 is directly connected to its' on ISP and A2 is directly connected to its' own ISP, too. A1 and A2 are performing eBGP, iBGP and OSPF. I already configured all protocols and distributed the default gateway (A{1,2}) for B{1,2}. For that I created a 0.0.0.0/0 route in the static section of A{1,2} and filtered it out in the BGP-, OSPF-, and Kernel-table of A{1,2}: import filter { if net = 0.0.0.0/0 then reject; accept}; export all; So, basicly A{1,2} should throw this default-route only in OSPF and they should not have the default-route in their own routing-table. But, unfortunately, A{1,2} actually do have this route in their table. How do I have to configure my protocols so that A{1,2} do not show this behavior? In my understandings, routers like A{1,2} should not have a default-route in their routing-table... My 2nd desire is the following: A{1,2} should throw the default-route in the OSPF area <only> if the BGP adjacency is reachable and the BGP peer is formed (BGP state should be established). Is this desire realizable with bird only? Has somebody already conquered this challenge? Or was it even a problem for anyone? Thanks in advance. Sascha

[PATCH master] IPv6 ECMP support fixes for linux
by Mikhail Sennikovskii 17 Feb '16

17 Feb '16

Hello Fellows, as a follow-up for the recent discussion about BIRD support of IPv6 ECMP on Linux ( http://trubka.network.cz/pipermail/bird-users/2016-January/010163.html ), I've created a patch, which addresses this problem. The current patch is against the master branch, i.e. for BIRD 1.x. I will also post a similar patch against the int-new branch, for BIRD 2. Note that the patch still does not support the learn mode for IPv6 ECMP. The support for it can be added later. Thanks, Mikhail

Exporting routes as text
by Victor Sudakov 17 Feb '16

17 Feb '16

Dear Colleagues, Is there a way to export (extract) routes from BIRD as a list of prefixes in text format, to a text file or pipe? I can perhaps write an expect script to communicate with birdc, but such kind of screenscraping is always the last resort. Or should I communicate through the /var/run/bird.ctl socket? What's the set of commands I can send to the socket to extract some routes with a filter? I can do: $ echo help | nc -U /var/run/bird.ctl 0001 BIRD 1.5.0 ready. 9001 syntax error Thank in advance for any input. Maybe there are sample scripts? -- Victor Sudakov, VAS4-RIPE, VAS47-RIPN sip:sudakov@sibptus.tomsk.ru
