BIRD Issues for a Newbie
by J Boyle 06 Feb '15

06 Feb '15

Hi, very new to BIRD, we use Quagga but I'm looking at implementing both. I have a Cisco 7200 peering with BIRD, as soon as I enable the peering the 7200 gets the full internet routing table but then hits 100% CPU until I disable the peering. I have peered the 7200 with Quagga and sent the full table and it has no problems at all, sits at around 40% CPU with the same full table. Here is the relevant config which is very basic, I've changed most of the settings without any change in the behaviour :( protocol kernel { # learn; # Learn all alien routes from the kernel # persist; # Don't remove routes on bird shutdown # scan time 20; # Scan kernel routing table every 20 seconds # import all; # Default is import all # export all; # Default is export none # kernel table 5; # Kernel table to synchronize with (default: main) } # This pseudo-protocol watches all interface up/down events. protocol device { scan time 1000; # Scan interfaces every 10 seconds protocol bgp RR_Test { description "RR_Test"; local as yyyy; neighbor x.x.x.x as yyyy; rr client; # export filter bgp_out; rr cluster id 0.0.0.10; export all; multihop; # import filter bgp_in; next hop self; source address x.x.x.x; ________________________________ NOTICE AND DISCLAIMER This e-mail (including any attachments) is intended for the above-named person(s). RAdv and AdvRouterAddr
by Vangass 06 Feb '15

Hi, Is it possible to configure Bird to set the AdvRouterAddr value in RAdv protocol? Now AdvRouterAddr is send with local-link address but I want to set it to send default gateway from advertised prefix. I did this using radvd but cannot in Bird. Best regards, Vangass

$Protocol State changed to up
by Bartosz Radwan 04 Feb '15

04 Feb '15

Hi there We're using bird as bgp router, have several upstram sessions established. Recently, I've switched on states logging using debug protocols {states}; I've noticed one of the bgp protocols emits State changed to up events on regular time basis: 2015-01-30T07:06:11+01:00 BGP-1 IX_RS2: State changed to up 2015-01-31T07:06:14+01:00 BGP-1 IX_RS2: State changed to up 2015-02-01T07:06:11+01:00 BGP-1 IX_RS2: State changed to up 2015-02-02T07:06:12+01:00 BGP-1 IX_RS2: State changed to up One and just one upstram. How should i interpret this? What is the equivalent of "State changed to up" in BGP finite state machine? Forgive me my lazyness, the answer is in the bird source for sure, but haven't enough time or knowledge to find out. Thanks in advance. -- A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? Bartosz Radwan

use Bird to lookup origin AS of given IP address
by 伊藤高一 02 Feb '15

02 Feb '15

Hello team I'm Koh-ichi Ito, from Japan. I'm working on development of JPIX(one of major IX in Japan)'s sFlow collector/analyzer. It has the function to lookup origin AS of both src/dst IP addresses on each flow samples and I'm going to implement it with Bird, so my counterpart person of JPIX advised me to subscribe this list and say hello you guys, so allow me to do so now. The unusual point of usage on my project is that frequently(yes, twice for each flow samples) issue of 'show route for x.y.z.w' via /var/run/bird.ctl (and bird6.ctl, too). I afraid that this wakes up hiding bugs. As of now, my prototype on test bench (not launched to the production yet) seems to work fine and I hope you to help me when I experience problems in the future. Thanks in advance. Hello, today we have a problem with our network. When connectivity problems between routers were solved, we noted that bird process not running. The process suddenly disappeared without any messages to logs. last lines from Bird trace log: 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bfd1: Session to 87.244.33.248 expired 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bfd1: Session to 87.244.33.248 changed state from Up to Down 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bgp_mtik_36: BFD session down 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bgp_mtik_36: State changed to flush 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bgp_mtik_36: BGP session closed 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bfd1: Session to 87.244.33.248 changed state from Down to Init 2015-01-29 16:36:12 <TRACE> bgp_mtik_36: State changed to stop 2015-01-29 16:36:13 <TRACE> bgp_mtik_36: Down 2015-01-29 16:36:13 <TRACE> bfd1: Session to 87.244.33.248 removed 2015-01-29 16:36:13 <TRACE> bgp_mtik_36: Starting # service bird start ... 2015-01-29 17:16:11 <TRACE> kernel1: Initializing ... Reject log message; bgp_community comparaison
by Arnaud Fenioux 29 Jan '15

29 Jan '15

Hello the bird community, I’ve two small questions, I've put them in the same mail even if they are not related : 1/ I currently use this code in my config to reject “martians” if ( is_martian() ) then { reject "prefix rejected by is_martian"; } Which prints in logs : <INFO> prefix rejected by is_martian Do you know if there is a way to add some variables in the log (like bgp_path.first, from or net) ? 2/ I’ve notice a “strange” behaviour when comparing communities, is this voluntary? Pair set have to be compared on the right : bird> show route where bgp_community ~ [ (51706,51706) ] count 2467 of 2467 routes for 2426 networks bird> show route where [ (51706,51706) ] ~ bgp_community count 0 of 2467 routes for 2426 networks Pair have to be compared on the left : bird> show route where (51706,51706) ~ bgp_community count 2467 of 2467 routes for 2426 networks bird> show route where bgp_community ~ (51706,51706) count 0 of 2467 routes for 2426 networks Thanks -- Arnaud Fenioux Network Engineer - FranceIX

OSPFv3 help
by Andre Nathan 27 Jan '15

27 Jan '15

Hello I'm trying to setup a simple lab test for OSPFv3 with bird. The configuration is as follows: eth1 eth0 eth0 eth1 <net 1>-------|router 1|------------|router 2|------<net 2> Both routers have on eth0 an fe80 (link-local) address but also an fd77/16 address. The configuration works but the routers export their link-local address as the gateway for their respective networks. For example: bird> show route fd77:a:b:c::/80 via fe80::21e:67ff:fe7b:31c9 on eth1 How do I override this behavior and export the fd77 address as the gateway address? Thanks, Andre
