PATCH: IO: Avoid calling SO_BINDTODEVICE if not needed

Since Linux 5.7 (see linux/c427bfec18f21) non-root users are allowed to bind a socket using SO_BINDTODEVICE as long as the socket is not already bound. When using BGP with VRFs, BIRD correctly binds the listening socket to the VRF but also re-binds the accept()'d socket to the same VRF. This is not needed as the interface bind is inherited in this case, and indeed this redundant bind causes an -EPERM if BIRD is running as non-root making BIRD close the connection and reject the peer. We change the behaviour of the generic sk_setup to first query the socket and see if the socket is already correctly bound, and call setsockopt(SO_BINDTODEVICE) iff it is truly needed. In addition, since the getsockopt(SO_BINDTODEVICE) was implemented in Linux 3.8 or otherwise might be blocked in existing installations, we quietly fall back to the previous behavior if the getsockopt call fails. Test case: Run BIRD as a non-root user (and no extra capabilities) using passive BGP inside a VRF. Before the patch observe the error: "<ERR> SOCK: Incoming connection: SO_BINDTODEVICE: Operation not permitted" protocol bgp AS1234_1 { [..] vrf "VrfTest"; passive on; } After the patch this works as expected. Hello, I have (once again) [1] some questions about babel's rtt: I have a network with several servers, which are distributed worldwide and connected via WireGuard tunnels. I run Babel as the routing protocol between them. Some of the VM's are in the same data center (latency < 1ms) and some are very far away (Germany <-> Hong Kong 300ms-400ms). Which rtt-min, rtt-max and rtt-cost/max-rtt-penalty would be suitable for such a network? I would be very happy to receive ideas and suggestions! EVPN IRB - RFC 9135 support

Dear BIRD community, I plan to use the BIRD EVPN beta implementation (https://gitlab.nic.cz/labs/bird/-/tree/evpn?ref_type=heads) for a private Lab. I use EVPN in my employer's data center (based on FRR), so I am already quite familiar with EVPN. If I don't miss anything, the current EVPN implementation does't support EVPN IRB as described in RFC 9135. Since I only want to use BIRD EVPN in a lab, this is not a big problem for me. Of course I could use FRR, which supports IRB, but since I use BIRD everywhere, it would be nice if I could also use it in the EVPN lab. So my question is: Are there any plans to implement RFC 9135 in the foreseable future? I know, this isn't a 5 minute task and fully understand if it's not planned due to low priority. Maybe I can use the new L3VPN feature as an alternative then. Has anyone tried it yet? Otherwise, I'll have a look at it, as soon as I find some time. Best regards, Erik

Limit of numbers of BGP communities

What is the expected iBGP behaviour for routes with different local_pref?

Hello everyone, I was wondering how bird *should* behave if within one AS a route is received from outside multiple times but with different local_pref set? My expectation would be that using iBGP, the lower local_pref route would show up on all routers, but the higher one is selected. What I observe is that seems the router who initially receives the lower local_pref route does not export it via iBGP, even though it matches the export filter. Example: - server145 has a non-preferable uplink and imports all routes with local_pref = 80 - server137 has a preferable uplink and imports all routes without local_pref modification, thus local_pref = 100 - Since we are missing a way to apply a wildcard on ASN for extended community, is there a way to extract value from ec list? IPv6 BFD interop with Huawei, checksum 0 UDP

Hello, At least some Huawei devices use a checksum of 0 for all IPv6 BFD UDP packets after finishing Poll/Final. All packets sent with states other than Up or with flags other than C have the correct checksums. IPv6 checksum issues with UDP seem to be rather common with network vendors, for example Cisco has very relevant problems in IPv6 BFD [1] and has added a command around this issue [2]; other vendors have articles around various problems with the mandatory checksums. Following the RFCs this should be a bug on the Huawei side since the checksum is mandatory. But getting Huawei to fix this could be difficult or impossible and I personally do not have options to pursue that. These problem devices are not under my control. I have no relationship with Huawei. This issue could be worked around on the BIRD side at least on the Linux platform. RFC6936 allows [3] for hosts to enable accepting IPv6 UDP with a checksum of 0 and this is implemented in Linux kernels from 3.16 with sockopt "UDP_NO_CHECK6_RX". I have tested that this indeed works: checksum 0 packets are received to AF_INET6, SOCK_DGRAM sockets when it is enabled. I wonder if it would be acceptable to enable this option on the IPv6 socket(s) used for BFD in BIRD, if supported by the platform? I understand this idea may be controversial given it is not portable and the reason for the workaround. At minimum I hope this post may be informative for others failing to setup IPv6 BFD with Huawei.
