Importing kernel routes
by Jann Traschewski 06 Nov '09

06 Nov '09

Ahoj, I want to import the following route into the bird: db0fhn:~# ip route show table 230 44.4.28.50 via 75.101.49.52 dev tunl0 onlink The syslog shows: Oct 19 19:21:49 db0fhn bird: Kernel told us to use non-neighbor 75.101.49.52 for 44.4.28.50/32 I'm pretty sure to add this route to the bird for redistribution via BGP4. My config: protocol kernel { learn; # Learn all alien routes from the kernel persist; # Don't remove routes on bird shutdown scan time 20; # Scan kernel routing table every 20 seconds export all; # Default is export none kernel table 230; # Kernel table to synchronize with (default: main) } My version: 1.1.4 (Debian/Lenny) How can I solve this problem? Thank you, Jann Traschewski -- Jann Traschewski, Drosselstr.1, D-90513 Zirndorf, Germany Tel.: +49-911-696971, Mobile: +49-170-1045937, E-Mail: jann(a)gmx.de

problems: bird on ulibc openwrt with ospf
by None 03 Nov '09

Hello, I got in touch with bird after your great presentation at the ripe meeting. I like to use bird on small embeded WLAN routers like the linksys WRT54g, running OpenWRT kamikaze, a uLibc linux system. I've spent several days in getting my configuration running. From today on, it does work (more ore less) and I'd like to describe my problems. I started with bird 1.1.4 (and today 1.1.5) - both birds have the same problem. I cross-compiled bird for uLibc mipsel myself. bird 1.1.5 is only 390252 bytes large (striped, compiled without CFLAG -g); bird 1.1.4 was a bit smaller. Because free flash storage is a problem on these plattforms, I did not use the birdc control program. Instead, I configured bird with log stderr all; debug protocols all; and I started bird with /usr/sbin/bird -c /etc/bird.conf -s /tmp/bird.ctl -d & on both routers. This way I could see what's going on. Bird told it was learning the routes (from OSPF between the two embeded routers), but they did not appear in the kernel routing table. I even used strace and ltrace and saw that bird did not do any system- or library-calls for setting routes. The debug output has not told me why. Unfortunately, bird does only listen on unix sockets. With 256k free "disk" space I could not install birdc, because it depends on libncurses. libncurses is 258343 bytes large. Wrapper programs like socat are also too big. It would be nice if birdc could be used to speak over tcp to the remote system's bird.. Today I copied libncurses and birdc to /tmp (ramfs) and symlinked libncurses to /usr/lib. After this, I was able to use birdc and saw what's going on. linux kernel routing table: # route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 10.25.193.248 * 255.255.255.248 U 0 0 0 br-wlan50LINK 10.25.193.128 10.25.193.64 255.255.255.248 UG 0 0 0 br-lan 10.25.190.248 * 255.255.255.248 U 0 0 0 br-wlan24LINK 10.25.193.144 10.25.193.65 255.255.255.248 UG 0 0 0 br-lan 10.25.193.224 * 255.255.255.240 U 0 0 0 br-wlan24USER 10.25.193.0 * 255.255.255.128 U 0 0 0 br-lan bird> sh ro 10.0.0.0/8 via 10.25.193.254 on br-wlan50LINK [ospf1 12:57] E2 (150/10/10000) 10.25.193.224/28 dev br-wlan24USER [direct1 12:56] (240) 10.25.190.248/29 dev br-wlan24LINK [direct1 12:56] (240) dev br-wlan24LINK [ospf1 12:57] I (150/20) 10.25.193.248/29 dev br-wlan50LINK [direct1 12:56] (240) dev br-wlan50LINK [ospf1 12:57] I (150/10) 192.168.1.0/24 via 10.25.193.254 on br-wlan50LINK [ospf1 12:57] IA (150/20) 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo [direct1 12:56] (240) 10.25.193.0/24 dev lo [static1 12:56] (1000) 10.25.193.0/25 dev br-lan [direct1 12:56] (240) 10.25.190.0/24 via 10.25.193.254 on br-wlan50LINK [ospf1 12:57] E2 (150/10/10000) 10.25.190.0/25 via 10.25.193.254 on br-wlan50LINK [ospf1 12:57] E2 (150/10/10000) -> as you can see, the kernel did not learn the routes from the ospf neighbor (10.25.193.254) like 10/8, 10.25.190.0/25, etc. "sh protocols" shows that all protocols are running. But I cannot do this without manually disable-/enableing protocol kernel1 via birdc. Do you have any ideas what causes this problem? As you can see, it's beautiful with bird to set up two direct paths to the same ospf neighbor: the first is a the primary wlan link on 5GHz with high ospf priority and the second is a backup wlan link on 2.4GHz with lower ospf priority If 5GHz fails, the 2.4GHz link is used, at both sides. Btw, when do you expect bird's ospf will learn the NSSA (not-so-stubby area) feature? Regards, - Thomas PS: I'm not subscribed to the mailing-list yet. ----- End forwarded message -----

neighbor ospf bird crash after local configure
by Martin Kraus 02 Nov '09

hello. I've managed to crash two remote bird instances on two remote routers by running configure on a local bird instance. they are in the same ospf area, but on different interfaces. third remote router, which is connected to those two interfaces, survived. this is the interesting part in the log. 31-10-2009 19:40:08 <TRACE> ospf1: Scheduling RT calculation. 31-10-2009 19:40:08 <TRACE> ospf1: Starting routing table calculation 31-10-2009 19:40:08 <TRACE> ospf1: Starting routing table calculation for area 0.0.0.0 31-10-2009 19:40:08 <ERR> Router's parent has no next hop. New release 1.1.5
by Ondrej Filip 02 Nov '09

02 Nov '09

Hello! New version is ready. This version includes some minor enhancements. Version 1.1.5 (2009-10-29) o Better scalability of BGP. o New accessors for AS path - first and last. o Allows to set protocol-specific router ID. o Allows import kernel 'onlink' routes. o Endianity check in buildsystem changed. RPM packages are on-line. Debian will follow quickly. I expect that guys working on Gentoo and FreeBSD ports will be also quick as usually. :-) Ondrej

Filter examples
by openbsd misc 01 Nov '09

01 Nov '09

Hi, I'm investigating Bird and I'm interested in seeing some more examples of filters I'm looked at test.conf and I'd rather see some real world filters, stuff that people typically do, change local pref for example. Can anyone help with examples or pointers to more filter examples. Currently have Bird 1.1.4 on latest Debian Cheers Jon

how to set priority of routers in ospf
by Martin Kraus 27 Oct '09

27 Oct '09

Hello. I'm running ospf from a router against two other routers on the same ethernet segment. Those two routers a both capable of routing given prefixes, but I prefer one of them to do the actual routing and use the other one as a backup router in case of emergencies. How can I set such a preference? I thought of using ospf_metric2, but it is supposed to work only when ospf_metric1 isn't set, which is (checked using show route all). For some reason the configuration does what I need, but I can't figure out why. Could anyone shed some light on this? thanks mk

My routing size is too big!
by David J Craigon 15 Oct '09

15 Oct '09

Hello, I'm trying to use bird to get the complete internet routing table onto a linux box. I've got a BGP session with a transit provider. It works for a bit then bombs out with: ebgp: Received: Maximum number of prefixes reached: 00010100000002 Interestingly, if I redirect these routes into an alternative routing table (e.g. table test; protocol bgp ebgp { ... table test; ... } ), it works OK. 1) Where do I need to increase the limit? In bird? In the Kernel? 2) Can I route them into a separate routeing table, aggregate them, then inject them into the kernel? Any help appreciated, David

ospf interoperability problems with cisco and other errors
by Csaba Szép 05 Oct '09

05 Oct '09

Hi All! I'm a very new bird user, but i have some problems with cisco 7200 router. First, the HELLO packet ignored with "Bad OSPF hello packet from 1.0.0.1 received: options mismatch (0x12)." if i use the cisco default ospf configuration. With "ip ospf lls disable" option everything is ok. Second, i advertise some alias IP from the pc to the cisco router, but if i remove the alias address from the interface some OSPF routes still present in the cisco router. Here is the relevant configuration: Cisco 7200 12.2(28)SB5 interface Loopback0 ip address 3.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 ! interface FastEthernet0/0 ip address 1.0.0.1 255.255.255.0 ip ospf message-digest-key 1 md5 benabela ip ospf lls disable duplex full ! router ospf 1 log-adjacency-changes area 0.0.0.0 authentication message-digest network 1.0.0.0 0.0.0.255 area 0.0.0.0 default-information originate ! ip classless ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Loopback0 Bird 1.1.4 protocol kernel { learn; scan time 20; import all; export none; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol ospf ospf1 { debug { routes, filters }; export filter { if net ~ 192.0.2.0/24 then accept; reject; }; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "tap1" { authentication cryptographic; password "benabela"; }; }; }; ip addr show output without alias adresses: 22: tap1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 500 link/ether 00:ff:1a:ea:21:0c brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet 1.0.0.2/24 brd 1.0.0.255 scope global tap1 inet6 fe80::2ff:1aff:feea:210c/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever The tap1 and cisco fa0/0 is bridged.
