Kernel protocol

Hello guys! I would like to ask you what would you think the better practice would be: Can we remove totally the kernel protocol? I thought no but we tested it and it works. Now we have on our linuxbox set the static routes outside bird daemon, where we specify that the caches we have are behind the border routers. Would it be safe to totally remove this from the system configs and only use the Direct protocol as we said yesterday, and rely on the direct protocol that it learns the connected network and the multihop of the caches which reside behind the border routers? Re: BIRD drops specific IPv6 session for no reason

Hi Stefan (and the rest of the community), To give you an update, two days before we upgraded one of our Route servers with Kernel version 4.9 and at the same time we upgraded Bird to version 1.6.8 Situation became worse, the customer who reported the bug, 6 hours after the maintenance he complained for severe flapping. After checking the logs, we could clearly see that his IPv6 BGP session was flapping 3-4 times per hour. Always the same “Hold timer expired” reason. We tried: - sysctl -w net.ipv6.route.max_size=65536 Apparently didn’t work much and the flapping continued. Then we tried: - ethtool -K eth1 tx-gso-partial off. (per Stefan’s recommendation) That seemed to bring some stability for few hours. But during night it started crashing again and we also observed some flapping during the morning. Now we applied the "net.ipv6.route.max_size = 2147483647” in an attempt to make it more stable, after digging around the net and discovering the following thread: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=861115 <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=861115> But this is really weird and not much in the logs to figure out the root cause. Question regarding an unreachable protocol

Hello dear Maria! Hello bird community! I have a question to ask you. We realized that there is one BGP session which bird sees it as an unreachable destination, thus it doesn't advertise its prefixes to the other peers, since it does not go to the master table. We run v2.0.7 and hereby I paste some outputs and then some configs on this regard. The protocol is up. It is pingable and traceable. Can I configure IPv6 prefix delegation with radv protocol? I could not find in the documentation how to do this. I have allocated the /48 subnet to the customer and I want to assign the first /64 to the WAN link (for communication between my router and the client's router), and give the remaining subnets to the client router.

[PATCH 0/4] Add MAC authentication support to the Babel protocol

This series adds MAC authentication support to the Babel protocol as specified in by the IETF Babel working group in draft-babel-hmac-10: https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-babel-hmac-10 An initial RFC patch series was posted here in July 2018[0]. Since then, the protocol specification has progressed through the IETF, to the point where it is now in the IESG publication queue as a proposed standard RFC. This version of the patch series updates the implementation to correspond to the final version of the draft, and also addresses the review comments from the initial RFC patch. The major changes are: Major updates to the specification (for a full list see the draft appendix): - Added Blake2s as a recommended algorithm - Updated terminology to use MAC everywhere instead of HMAC (since Blake is not an HMAC algorithm). - Added expiration of neighbours and rate limiting of challenge replies - Update TLV type numbers after IANA allocation In addition, the following changes have been made to the implementation: - Add wrapper function to bird sysdep code to pick a suitable source of random bytes - Import reference Blake2 implementations into lib/ - Rename function names and data structures to use an auth_ prefix instead of hmac_ - Perform a separate authentication pass before parsing the packet, and move the authentication-related code to its own source file - Enforce key length recommendation from the specification - Add a 'permissive' configuration mode where outgoing packets are signed but incoming packets are accepted even though they fail authentication - Add user documentation for the authentication configuration, and function docstrings to the main authentication functions - Fix a bunch of nits and code style issues I have performed basic interoperability testing between this implementation and the current babeld HMAC implementation[1]. The two implementations were able to successfully exchange authenticated messages with both HMAC-256 and Blake2s keys. Given the above, and the close-to-final state of the specification at the IETF, I believe this series is ready for merging (subject to review, of course). For those wanting to test the code, a version of Bird with this series applied is available on Github[2] for easy consumption. Unwanted IPv6 static route flap

I am struggling to understand and ideally eliminate an unwanted flap (i.e. delete and re-add) of an IPv6 route on node M, when a neighbouring node R restarts, and R is configured to advertise that IPv6 route statically. BGP routes not being propagated to kernel via OSPF

Greetings, I have a network with four routers on an OSPF backbone. Only one of the four routers cannot export the type 5 LSA entries to the kernel. I cannot figure out why. I wonder if I might kindly ask some guidance. The routers (including the problem router) are all BIRD 2.0.7 with the router with IP 10.10.4.1 running 2.0.4. The kernels are Linux 4.20.x.
