[BGP] MRAI connection-based implementation review
by Mattia Milani 06 Apr '20

06 Apr '20

Hello to everyone, in the past months I have implemented the MRAI timer in the BGP protocol and I would like to ask you guys how can I submit this code in order to receive a review form someone more expert than me? My implementation is on a connection-based approach timer and now I'm working on the destination based timer. I have also inserted some new keywords to control this timer from the configuration file. I'm not sure my code is 100% correct, but from the tests that I have done it works. Thanks for the help, Mattia

Build for Debian MIPS
by Ross Tajvar 05 Apr '20

05 Apr '20

Hi, I am currently using BIRD 1.6.3 on an Edgerouter Pro. The CPU architecture is MIPS and the OS is based on Debian Stretch. Because of the latter, I can use the Debian package repos to install BIRD 1.6.3, however I would like to upgrade to BIRD 2 which does not have a package built. I noticed there is another repo (located at http://bird.network.cz/debian) which maintains BIRD 2 for Debian Stretch, however those packages are not built for the MIPS architecture. I tried building the package myself in a virtual system emulated with qemu, but the build failed with the following error: > obj/lib/fletcher16_test 2>/dev/null && touch obj/lib/fletcher16_test.ok > obj/lib/fletcher16_test: t_fletcher16_compute 0.007899378s > [FAIL] > obj/lib/fletcher16_test: t_fletcher16_checksum 0.004199340s > [FAIL] > obj/lib/fletcher16_test 0.015348769s > [FAIL] > Makefile:180: recipe for target 'obj/lib/fletcher16_test.ok' failed > make[1]: *** [obj/lib/fletcher16_test.ok] Error 1 > make[1]: Leaving directory '/root/src/debian/bird2-2.0.7' > dh_auto_test: make -j1 test VERBOSE=1 returned exit code 2 > debian/rules:21: recipe for target 'build' failed > make: *** [build] Error 2 > dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2 > debuild: fatal error at line 1116: > dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -us -uc -b failed Would it be possible to add MIPS as a build target for the bird.network.cz repo? Thanks, Ross

by Fabiano D'Agostino 03 Apr '20

Good morning, how can I see the as path of a route? I think the command is 'show route' and I get: 192.168.5.0/24 unicast [bgp1 ...]*(100) [AS3i] via.. What is 100? AS3 should be the as path, right? Why is there an 'i'? Thanks, Fabiano

OSPF v3 in VRF stuck in 'Alone' state
by bauen1 26 Mar '20

26 Mar '20

Hello, I'm running bird inside a vrf and I'm trying to setup an OSPF v3 ipv4 and ipv6 "peering" over a wireguard vpn inside that vrf. And bird does see the interface (as ptp), and sends 'HELLO' OSPF packets over the interface, these packets also arrive at the other side (where the same is happening). However bird doesn't seem to receive the incoming packets, they do appear in tcpdump but not in birds log output with 'debug all'. The OSPF protcol on both sides is stuck in the 'Alone' State with no neighbours. bird version: jhserver: v2.0.4-44-gd843c274 dn42-uk-london0: 2.0.7 Both interfaces have all necessary ip / ipv6 addresses: 66: dn42-uk-london0: <POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1420 qdisc noqueue master vrf-dn42 state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000 link/none inet 172.20.18.226 peer 172.20.18.225/32 scope link dn42-uk-london0 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet6 fdbb:baba:2468:2::4445 peer fdbb:baba:2468::1/128 scope global valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet6 fe80::55d2:c4ab peer fe80::c87a:cc67/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever 26: jhserver-dn42: <POINTOPOINT,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue master dn42 state UNKNOWN group default qlen 1000 link/none inet 172.20.18.225 peer 172.20.18.226/32 scope link jhserver-dn42 valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet6 fdbb:baba:2468::1 peer fdbb:baba:2468:2::4445/128 scope global valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever inet6 fe80::c87a:cc67 peer fe80::55d2:c4ab/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever Relevant part of the config: jhserver: protocol ospf v3 dn42_ospf_ip4 { router id DN42_OWNIP; debug all; vrf "vrf-dn42"; ipv4 { table dn42_ip4; export all; import keep filtered; import none; }; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "vrf-dn42" { stub yes; }; interface "dn42-uk-london0" { }; }; }; protocol ospf v3 dn42_ospf_ip6 { router id DN42_OWNIP; debug all; vrf "vrf-dn42"; ipv6 { table dn42_ip6; export all; import keep filtered; import none; }; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "vrf-dn42" { stub yes; }; interface "dn42-uk-london0" { }; }; }; dn42-uk-london0: protocol ospf v3 dn42_ospf_ip4 { router id DN42_OWNIP; debug all; vrf "dn42"; ipv4 { table dn42_ip4; export all; import keep filtered; import none; }; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "dn42" { stub yes; }; interface "jhserver-dn42" { }; }; }; protocol ospf v3 dn42_ospf_ip6 { router id DN42_OWNIP; debug all; vrf "dn42"; ipv6 { table dn42_ip6; export all; import keep filtered; import none; }; area 0.0.0.0 { interface "dn42" { stub yes; }; interface "jhserver-dn42" { }; }; }; Any help is appreciated. bauen1

RPKI support without SSH transport
by Clemens Schrimpe 25 Mar '20

25 Mar '20

Ahoj BIRD Parents - I was wondering if there is a reason, why BIRD 2.0.x can't be built for RPKI support without libssh, although RPKI-RTR would also work on an unencrypted transport (as documented in the BIRD user documentation). I am asking, because I am building BIRD for a hardware router platform (Ubiquiti's EdgeRouters) and including libssh is, although doable, a real pain-in-the-rear, depending on the OS version and hardware architecture (4 variants in the EdgeOS world at the moment). Without libssh, which drags a whole slew of other library-crap behind it 🙄, BIRD is pretty lightweight and very easy to deploy. Just curious ... Thanks a lot (again) for this great piece of software! Clemens

Re: Direct protocol affects BGP
by Fabiano D'Agostino 25 Mar '20

25 Mar '20

Hi Bernd, no, the routing "from the kernel" doesn't come via 'learn yes', but via RIB, I mean if I do 'route' it shows the directly connected networks. The problem is that if I use the Direct protocol, the command 'route' shows me two same directly connected networks, one coming from RIB and the other one coming from Bird. I tried protocol bgp { direct; }, but it doesn't change.
