Re: Direct protocol affects BGP

Hi Benedikt, I am just learning Bird and I didn't want to use the Direct protocol because using it I have two same routes in the RIB for the directly connected networks, one coming from the kernel and the second one coming from the direct protocol. Direct protocol affects BGP
by Fabiano D'Agostino 23 Mar '20

23 Mar '20

Hi all, why if I disable the direct protocol the BGP routes are not imported/exported? If I run show route, it is empty, while if I enable the direct protocol show route has directly connected routes and BGP routes. My configuration is very easy, two routers make a eBGP peering and they import and export all routes. I am using Bird 2.0.7. Thanks, Fabiano

Hi, we get this error about 7 times an hour on a BGP router running BIRD 2.0.7 on FreeBSD: <ERR> KRT: Error sending route xxxx/46 to kernel: File exists Is this something we should look into? thanks!

Hello, It appears you haven't launched BIRD for it to 1. create the socket, and 2. to listen on it. If you don't have any other manually started running instances (to verify, run ps -aux | grep bird and check if there are any other instances), you should just run systemctl start bird and if you want it to auto-start, systemctl enable bird. P.S.: sorry for mailing in private, I clicked on the wrong button. Yes, but how can I do that command if when I try to connect to birdc I get the error above? birdc config not bring the bgp up
by Wei Huang 20 Mar '20

20 Mar '20

I'm using bird 1.6.8. I changed my bird config by adding bgp protocol to it. Then run command "birdc config" to apply the config. After that, the BGP session is not up: root@CL1:~# tcondr configureReading configuration from /home/talariuser/bird/etc/bird.conf Reconfiguredroot@CL1:~# tcondr BIRD 1.6.8 ready. Access restricted bird> sh proto name proto table state since info talari_apn0 apn T0 up 2020-03-20 15:30:08 device1 Device master up 2020-03-20 15:30:08 bgp1_rdomain_0 BGP T0 start 2020-03-20 15:44:42 Idle Received: Bad BGP identifier direct1 Direct T0 up 2020-03-20 15:43:47 But if I restart bird, the BGP session comes up. I can't find any detail information about birdc on the web site. Is this command not valid any more in 1.6.8 or is there a bug in that? Wei

Kernel protocol
by Irene Lalioti 20 Mar '20

20 Mar '20

Hello guys! I would like to ask you what would you think the better practice would be: Can we remove totally the kernel protocol? I thought no but we tested it and it works. Now we have on our linuxbox set the static routes outside bird daemon, where we specify that the caches we have are behind the border routers. Would it be safe to totally remove this from the system configs and only use the Direct protocol as we said yesterday, and rely on the direct protocol that it learns the connected network and the multihop of the caches which reside behind the border routers? Thanks a lot!! Irene -- Irene Lalioti Network Engineer Fondation RESTENA 2, avenue de l'Université L-4365 Esch/Alzette Tel: +352 424409 1 Fax: +352 422473

Re: BIRD drops specific IPv6 session for no reason
by Stavros Konstantaras 19 Mar '20

Hi Stefan (and the rest of the community), To give you an update, two days before we upgraded one of our Route servers with Kernel version 4.9 and at the same time we upgraded Bird to version 1.6.8 Situation became worse, the customer who reported the bug, 6 hours after the maintenance he complained for severe flapping. After checking the logs, we could clearly see that his IPv6 BGP session was flapping 3-4 times per hour. Always the same “Hold timer expired” reason. We tried: - sysctl -w net.ipv6.route.max_size=65536 Apparently didn’t work much and the flapping continued. Then we tried: - ethtool -K eth1 tx-gso-partial off. (per Stefan’s recommendation) That seemed to bring some stability for few hours. But during night it started crashing again and we also observed some flapping during the morning. Now we applied the "net.ipv6.route.max_size = 2147483647” in an attempt to make it more stable, after digging around the net and discovering the following thread: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=861115 <https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=861115> But this is really weird and not much in the logs to figure out the root cause. But thank’s for the tip and sorry for the late reply.
