The obvious way would be to use a FHRP such as VRRP or CARP, alternatively use something like RIP in receive only mode. There has to be a decent reason to use that though! While we're on this topic... I'm facing a similar situation, where a bunch of publicly addressable hosts have a primary default route and a secondary. I was wondering if there is some reliable way of doing this kind of failover, or even if there is a ready-made solution out there. My concern with doing this myself is important scenarios I might be missing. For example, routers that drop pings under congestion. Or indeed if both my routers end up in an unreachable state, to not end up with an empty route table. I'm not on FreeBSD, but Linux myself. And I know Linux can do failover using the neighbour table and multiple routes with metrics. But all of this appears to be undocumented voodoo. What's really the proper way of doing this? Detecting link state, FreeBSD

I'm running bird 1.2.4 on a series of FreeBSD OSPF routers. Had a backhoe go through some fiber this morning (really), and was surprised to find that bird didn't update routes automatically. The state of the interface in question looked like so, while bird was still happily reporting that it was available: bge1: flags=8802<UP,BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> metric 0 mtu 1500 options=9b<RXCSUM,TXCSUM,VLAN_MTU,VLAN_HWTAGGING,VLAN_HWCSUM> ether 00:18:8b:f6:e5:a8 inet x.x.x.x netmask 0xfffffffc broadcast x.x.x.x media: Ethernet autoselect (none) status: no carrier I performed a 'ifconfig bge1 down', and the failover routes immediately propagated. I've got a device scan in my config: protocol device { scan time 10; } I don't see anything else to add or modify in the config for checking interface status -- did I miss something? My anticipated behavior would be that a link down would perform a route update. It appears that interface state with the 'device' protocol is different or separate from its link state. Or maybe this is a FreeBSD (or Broadcom?) specific issue? Any ideas/suggestions appreciated. -- Mahlon E. Smith http://www.martini.nu/contact.html

Hi! New version is ready. Although we have planned 1.3.0, we decided to make yet another 1.2.x version. There are no new features but some minor bugfixes collected by Ondrej Zajicek. Fedora packages are ready. I believe all other distro packages will follow soon. Ondrej

How to add IPv6 support?

I don't see a single bit about this in the documentation ... For quite some time bird served me very well for dynamic routing within a small network using the BGP method. Until the day when I wanted to enable IPv6 on all routers. The Debian distribution ships two packages, bird and bird6, and as far as I can see the only difference is the latter was compiled using the --enable-ipv6 option. Now what am I supposed to do? Is bird6 supposed to do _all_ the work, v4 and v6? If yes, is it a feature bird6 cannot handle IPv4 addresses in the bgp "neighbor" statement (yields "syntax error")? Prefixing into a v6 address using '::ffff:' survives the parser, but these addresses are not routed. Or should I really start bird6 as a second routing daemon to handle the IPv6 prefixes? This is silly since this means duplication of the configuration file and all the peer detection and route switching is not synchronized. What magic did I miss? Christoph

BIRD crashes caused by quagga OSPF?

Hi, I'm running two Linux Quagga servers and two BIRD servers inside an OSPF backbone area (brodcast network). The BIRD serveres are running on a FreeBSD 8.1 system with the 1.2.4 BIRD version. The BIRDs are also configured to run a Direct, Kernel, Device, Static and BGP protocol. Unfortunatelly, once a day both the BIRD daemons are crashing at the same time, probably caused by a bug in the OSPF protocol. There are now D.J.B's daemontools supervising the BIRD's processes to overcome the crashes. I can provide you with the BIRD / Quagga logs and a core dump file, if necessary. Thanks for your help. Deleting wildcard bgp communitities in an outbound filter

Hi, i would like to hide some traffic engineering communities from bgp advertisements to peers. I'm using Bird 1.2.4 and from what I have read in the Changelog it should be possible to have something like this in an outbound filter bgp_community.delete((65000,*)); However, this statement generates a syntax error.
