Hi All! I have established a bgp session to my isp using bird. I have one problem. The session works great but it doesn't advertise my inetnum. I can't find it in the documentation how to define my inetnum and how to advertise it? My cfg: protocol bgp { # disabled; description "lol"; local as 51060; neighbor 213.5.9.73 as 49895; # multihop 20 via 62.168.0.13; hold time 240; startup hold time 240; connect retry time 120; keepalive time 80; # defaults to hold time / 3 start delay time 5; # How long do we wait before initial connect error wait time 60, 300;# Minimum and maximum time we wait after an error (when consecutive # # errors occur, we increase the delay exponentially ... error forget time 300; # ... until this timeout expires) # disable after error; # Disable the protocol automatically when an error occurs # next hop self; # Disable next hop processing and always advertise our local address as nexthop path metric 1; # Prefer routes with shorter paths (like Cisco does) default bgp_med 0; # MED value we use for comparison when none is defined default bgp_local_pref 0; # The same for local preference source address localip; # What local address we use for the TCP connection # password "idonotusemd5"; # Password used for MD5 authentication # rr client; # I am a route reflector and the neighor is my client # rr cluster id 1.0.0.1; # Use this value for cluster id instead of my router id # export where source=RTS_STATIC; export filter { if source = RTS_STATIC then { bgp_community = -empty-; bgp_community = add(bgp_community,(51060,49895)); bgp_origin = 0; bgp_community = -empty-; bgp_community.add((51060,49895)); if (51060,49895) ~ bgp_community then bgp_community.add((0, 1)); if bgp_path ~ [= 51060 =] then bgp_path.prepend(51060); accept; } reject; # accept; }; } Big thanks !!!! -- Pozdrawiam! bgp protocol info in passive mode
by Arjan Filius 02 Jul '10

02 Jul '10

Hello Bird-users, Currently making some monitor scripts, and working on that i noticed a little difference with 2 (ipv4 and ipv6) export-only bgp protocols. ipv4: bird> show protocols name proto table state since info <snip> bgp_Arjan_Filius BGP master start Jun25 Passive ipv6: bird> show protocols name proto table state since info <snip> bgp_Arjan_Filius BGP master start Jun25 Idle Notice the difference in the info field on both the ipv6 and ipv4 definition i'd used the "passive on;" statement Both the protocol definitions are exactly the same, apart from the neighbor definition. The only difference is the ipv4 neigbor is in a direct connected subnet, where the ipv6 isn't. After "fixing" the ipv6 passive neigbor to a direct connected ip i got the "Passive" in the info field. I'm not sure what is the correct behaviour, but displaying passive when actually passive eases my monitoring scripts. Regards -- Arjan Filius mailto:iafilius@xs4all.nl

May have found an ipa_classify bug in OSPFv3 BIRD
by Michael Adams 02 Jul '10

02 Jul '10

I was trying out BIRD on a work router, and notice that it is rejecting my ULA-based addresses on the interfaces, but not the global ones (I use two subnets: one for internal work stuff that rarely changes & one for public access that can change with our tunnel broker/v6 access). Is anyone able to enable support for the fc00::/7 range? As far as I can tell in the public GIT, the function calling the error is ipa_classify. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unique_local_address Thanks, Michael Adams http://unquietwiki.com/ The information in this email is confidential and may be legally privileged. Nagios plugin
by Stéphan Kochen 25 Jun '10

25 Jun '10

Hello list, Here's a quick plug-in for Nagios to monitor a specific protocol: http://github.com/stephank/nagios-bird I wrote this, because a quick Google and search through this list's archives didn't turn up anything. Correct me if I'm wrong here. Feel free to make requests or suggestions for other BIRD things you may want to monitor through Nagios. I was thinking of writing a plugin that monitors a specific prefix or destination and ensures there's a route. But if there's other ideas out there, share, and I'll consider them. No routes seen, as32 issue?
by Simone Morandini 24 Jun '10

24 Jun '10

Hi bird-users, I'm having a problem with the latest member I've connected to the route server. I followed the same procedure as the others (generating the config file with a script), but although the session is actually established, he doesn't receive any of the routes announced on the route server. bird> show protocols all MYPEER Routes: 1 imported, 0 exported, 35 preferred Route change stats: received rejected filtered ignored accepted Import updates: 1 0 0 0 1 Import withdraws: 0 0 --- 0 0 Export updates: 1 1 0 --- 0 Export withdraws: 0 --- --- --- 0 BGP state: Established while, for example, for our router (MIX) it shows: bird> show protocols all MIX Routes: 1 imported, 635 exported, 34 preferred Route change stats: received rejected filtered ignored accepted Import updates: 1 0 0 0 1 Import withdraws: 0 0 --- 0 0 Export updates: 1009 1 0 --- 1008 Export withdraws: 372 --- --- --- 372 MYPEER announces only one network and I'm actually receiving it both via the direct peering and the route server, but he doesn't receive any routes from the other neighbors. He is not sending any communities to the RS, nor he is filtering. He just applies a specific local preference to the bgp session with the RS. MYPEER has a 32-bit ASN. I know that BIRD (I'm running v. 1.2.2) is AS32 compliant, but this is the only difference with respect to the other RS participants. Any clue on where to look further? TIA, Simone. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

showing all possible AS-paths?
by Arjan Filius 23 Jun '10

23 Jun '10

Hello Bird-users, Is there a way to get all route AS-path's information , and not just the slected path? either all, or just a specific route? I can see all routes, with it's selected path, but not (or don't know how to do it) all possible AS-path's. Thanks in advance Regards, -- Arjan Filius mailto:iafilius@xs4all.nl

RIP multicast is receiving, but can't transmit
by Stéphan Kochen 19 Jun '10

19 Jun '10

Hello! I'm setting up a test environment with Ubuntu 10.04 and BIRD 1.2.3 from the PPA. First step was to try and get a simple static route announced with RIP. This is the small test configuration I'm working with: > log stderr all; debug protocols all; > router id 10.2.2.1; > > protocol device { scan time 10; } > protocol kernel { export all; import none; } > > protocol static { route 10.5.5.0/24 via 10.2.2.2; } > > protocol rip { > interface "eth0" { mode multicast; }; > export all; import all; > } With this set-up, the static route is imported, and exported to the kernel and RIP protocols as expected: > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> kernel1 < added 10.5.5.0/24 via 10.2.2.2 on eth1 > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> rip1 < added 10.5.5.0/24 via 10.2.2.2 on eth1 > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> kernel1: 10.5.5.0/24: reinstalling There's a Quagga ripd in the network announcing another route for a subnet that lives inside a VLAN. It's picked up by the RIP protocol: > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> rip1: block: 192.168.123.6 tells me: 10.123.16.0/20 available, metric 1... > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> rip1 > added [best] 10.123.16.0/20 via 192.168.123.6 on eth0 > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> kernel1 < added 10.123.16.0/20 via 192.168.123.6 on eth0 > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> rip1 < forced accept by protocol 10.123.16.0/20 via 192.168.123.6 on eth0 > 11-06-2010 13:18:19 <TRACE> rip1 < added 10.123.16.0/20 via 192.168.123.6 on eth0 But BIRD is unable to transmit the static route I created. The RIP protocol seems to know about the route, as indicated above, but when it tries to transmit, I get: > 11-06-2010 13:18:29 <TRACE> rip1: Broadcasting routing table to eth0 > 11-06-2010 13:18:29 <ERR> rip1: Unexpected error at rip transmit: Invalid argument > 11-06-2010 13:18:29 <ERR> rip1: Unexpected error at rip transmit: Unknown error 18446744073709551615 The code is littered with DBG statements that I cannot seem to enable in the output. I tried a manual build with --enable-debug, and I'm running bird in the foreground with -d, but I'm still not seeing them. What is the proper way to get to this information? And is there something simple I'm missing to get RIP to work? Thanks in advance, -- Stéphan Kochen

syslog with a specific facility
by Arjan Filius 14 Jun '10

14 Jun '10

Hello bird-users We'd need functionality to send bird (remote) syslog as a specific facility. Are there any way's (planned) to do that? Tried with rsyslog to catch the bird logging, and sending it to a remote loghost, which works fine, except for the desired "relabeling" the facility. I see in the code in ./sysdep/unix/log.c:253 if (new_syslog_name) openlog(new_syslog_name, LOG_CONS | LOG_NDELAY, LOG_DAEMON); and changing LOG_DAEMON to the desired facility, and compiling/installing would do it i suppose. Any ideas if dynamic configuring syslog facility is on the roadmap, and if not may i make a request of it? Regards, Thanks in advance. -- Arjan Filius mailto:iafilius@xs4all.nl
