Hi. I built bird with --enable-v6 on FreeBSD8.0, then tried to peer by link local IPv6 address, but I couldn’t. I have 2 questions. Can anyone help me? 1. lladdress specification I can get output "fe80:[IfIndex]::[EUI64]" by show interface command in birdc6. but I think correct lladress format is "fe80::[EUI64]". what is happened ? can I change to lladdresses I want to use? 2.Syntax I wonder how to specify lladdress peering configuration. I write as followings, but it says "Syntax error". What do I do wrong? protocol bgp { local as [ASN]; neighbor [lladdress]%[InterfaceName] as [ASN]; import all; export all; } Makoto.

Hi! New version is ready. Santiago made a great job in bugfixing my very old code. And he added OSPFv3. :-) Version 1.2.0 (2010-01-05) o Implements OSPFv3 (IPv6 support for OSPF). Because the code is shared with OSPFv2 and there were deep changes in it, we suggest caution during upgrade to OSPF users. Some advanced features (like NSSA, vlinks and authentication) are not yet implemented. o Implements MRTdump - binary logging protocol compatible with other routing daemons. Only BGP part of MRTdump is yet implemented. o Changes default value of BGP attribute LOCAL_PREF from 0 to 100. Use 'default bgp_local_pref 0' BGP protocol option for the old behavior. The new value is suggested by RFC 4277. o Changes default mode of pipes from opaque to transparent. Use 'mode opaque' protocol option if the old behavior is needed. Opaque pipe mode is deprecated and might be removed in the future. All distro packages will follow soon. Ondrej

Hi! New version is ready. Some minor features added and a few bugs fixed. Version 1.2.1 (2010-02-11) o Option 'interpret communities' allows to override implicit handling of well-known communities. o 'configure' command uses route reload when filters change. o Adds router ID of advertising router as OSPF route attribute. o 'show route' command indicates primary route and shows OSPF Router ID. o Configurable date/time formats. o Symbol names can be enclosed by '' and so include hyphen and start with number. o Several minor bugfixes. Netlink: File exists

Hi. I'm experimenting with bird as a replacement for a quagga install, and tried the following very simple config: router id 91.203.57.1; protocol device { } protocol direct { } protocol kernel { import all; export all; } protocol bgp { local as 44934; neighbor 84.45.39.149 as 25577; import all; export all; } with bird-1.2.0 running on a (relatively old) linux 2.6.23.9 kernel. This seems to work fine, apart from the message "bird: Netlink: File exists" appearing in syslog every minute. My routing table before starting bird looks like this # ip route show 84.45.39.148/30 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 84.45.39.150 91.203.56.0/23 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 91.203.57.1 default via 84.45.39.149 dev eth1 in case this is related to bird being unable to overwrite the existing static routes? Also, I needed sysctl net.core.rmem_max=524284 before starting quagga to avoid netlink "recvmsg overrun" messages and occasional loss of prefixes. Am I right in assuming that bird will need the same thing for the same reason? Cheers, Chris.

Bird and memory consumption

Handling of no-export community is hardcoded in BIRD, so such routes are not exported to the external neighbors, as it is expected. Just a note that moving filters from pipes to bgp protocols have several other consequences, some positive, some negative: 1) You see just what is accepted and you cannot directly see rejected routes (but they can be seen in log, if enabled). 2) Rejected routes does not eat memory. 3) If you change filters and call 'configure', the appropriate protocol si restarted. If it is a pipe, it causes a route flap (routes propagated through the pipe a withdrawn and immediately repropagated), if it is a bgp protocol, it also causes a session flap (BGP session is restarted). Possible workaround is to use 'configure soft' command (which ignores changes related to filters) and then 'reload' command for protocols with changed filters. In your BIRD config, there are several routing tables and pipes between them. Prefixes accepted from protocol R15835x1 are put to table T15835 and then they are propagated through some pipe to table master. The difference between the commands is that each show the number of prefixes in the different table. I am not sure why there is any difference, perhaps you have some configured filter on that pipe? > 2. You can look at 'Routes: ' line in 'show protocols all' not for R15835x1 but for the pipe connecting T15835 and master.
