When an LSAck for an older LSA is received...

Hi, when I was testing BIRD in the lab, I encountered a question. First, this is the topology, which is a very simple one, two computers connect each other via a twisted pair: Laptop(eth0, 192.168.0.1)---------Point-to-Point---------(eth0, 192.168.0.2)Personal Computer(PC) | | | | | | | | | | ----- | ------------- ----- ----- | | | | | tap0 eth1 tap1 tap0 tap1 10.1.1.2/16 10.32.31.239/16 10.2.1.2/16 11.1.1.2/16 11.2.1.2/16 And following is part of the Wireshark capture file(plus my understandings behind "//"): NO. Time Source Destination Proto. Info. 7 14.064842000 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 OSPF DB Descr. 8 14.066061000 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 OSPF DB Descr. 9 14.067224000 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 OSPF DB Descr. 10 14.067619000 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 OSPF DB Descr. //Above is the Master/Slave negotiation and the DD packets transferring procedure. 12 17.071181000 192.168.0.2 224.0.0.5 OSPF Hello Packet 13 17.071241000 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 OSPF LS Request 14 17.071563000 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 OSPF LS Update //Age: 9secs, SeqNum: 0x80000001, Checksum: 0x2351 //After exchanging DD packets, Laptop requires LSA from the PC. And now in Laptop, the conversation between PC and Laptop has been in state FULL. 15 18.073167000 192.168.0.1 224.0.0.5 OSPF LS Update //Age: 1sec, SeqNum: 0x80000002, Checksum: 0x366b //Before PC is going to send LSR packet to Laptop, Laptop has flooded its newly originated LSA. When PC receives this LSU packet, it removes its LSR packet on the list. //And now in PC, the conversation between PC and Laptop has been in state FULL. 18 19.074720000 192.168.0.2 224.0.0.5 OSPF LS Update //Age: 1sec, SeqNum: 0x80000002, Checksum: 0xae33 //So the PC also originates its new LSA and floods it. 19 19.075041000 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 OSPF LS Acknowledge //This is for the No.14 LSU packet, delayed. 20 19.077611000 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 OSPF LS Acknowledge //This is for the No.15 LSU packet, delayed. 21 20.079119000 192.168.0.1 224.0.0.5 OSPF Hello Packet 24 24.083617000 192.168.0.2 192.168.0.1 OSPF LS Update //Here is the question, why this LSU is sent? 25 25.090754000 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2 OSPF LS Acknowledge //This is for the No.24 LSU packet. 26 27.093352000 192.168.0.2 224.0.0.5 OSPF Hello Packet 27 30.096506000 192.168.0.1 224.0.0.5 OSPF Hello Packet After checking debugging information in the syslog, I thought the reason might be this: In the PC's syslog, after the PC receiving the No.19 LSAck, here are some lines: (time information, etc.) test-ubuntu bird: testing_ospf: I have: Age: 0, Seqno: 0x80000002, Sum: 44595 (time information, etc.) test-ubuntu bird: testing_ospf: He has: Age: 9, Seqno: 0x80000001, Sum: 9041 It seems that it's comparing the received LSAck with the LSA in the LSDB. PC finds that the LSU that the LSAck acknowledges cannot be found in the LSDB - however there's a newer one. So the PC simply sends another newer LSU(which is the No.24 packet) to Laptop. Is this right? However, where is the corresponding operation described in RFC 2328? I searched the Section 13.7 Receiving link state acknowledgments without any results. Thanks!

How to see LSDB in BIRD?
by ChuYinsu 13 May '09

Hi, In order to study the OSPF protocol further, I want to see separate LSAs in the Link State Database, but in the terminal I cannot find the proper command. Does BIRD provide this function? Thanks!

Confused about "Import" and "Export".
by ChuYinsu 12 May '09

12 May '09

Hi, In Section 3.3 - Protocol options in the User's Guide, I noticed this: import all | none | filter name | filter { filter commands } | where filter expression Specify a filter to be used for filtering routes coming from the PROTOCOL to the ROUTING TABLE. all is shorthand for where true and none is shorthand for where false. Default: all. export filter This is similar to the import keyword, except that it works in the direction from the ROUTING TABLE to the PROTOCOL. Default: none. I'm a little confused what the capitalized words "PROTOCOL" and "ROUTING TABLE" exactly mean. For exmaple, if I wrote "import all;" in the OSPF protocol, it will import all the routes that OSPF protocol detects to the BIRD's routing table, right? But when I wrote "export all;" in the OSPF protocol, the routes will be exported from the BIRD's routing table to where? Also, if I wrote "import all;" and "export all;" in the Kernel protocol, the routes will be imported and exported from where to where? Is it importing from the kernel table to the BIRD's routing table and exporting routes from the BIRD's routing table to the kernel table? Thanks.

Novy release a dobra zprava
by Ondrej Filip 10 May '09

Nejak nechapu proc. Muj plan je takovy, ze si pripravim testovaci sit, abych presne otestoval konfiguraci pro takovy RS otestuji filtery a podobne hlouposti. Mozna z toho vyplyne pridani nejake nove vlastnosti. Urcite chci pridat jednu drobnost do CLI. Nicmene rad bych udelal novy release za cca 14 dnu rekneme 25.5. Santiago, planujes nejakou komplexni zmenu, ktera by neumoznovala release? Feela

Is this a mistake in the User's Guide?
by ChuYinsu 10 May '09

Hi, I found here: 5.2 Data types ... int|ip|prefix|pair|enum set ... Prefix ip1/len1 matches prefix pattern ip2/len2{l, h} iff the first min(len1, len2) bits of ip1> and ip2 are identical and len1 ip1 len2. A valid prefix pattern has to satisfy low high, but pxlen is not constrained by low or high. ... I don't quite understand the first sentence. And "A valid prefix pattern has to satisfy low high", is a "<" missed between "low" and "high"? All the above is discovered using my computer when viewing User's Guide online, and I don't know if there's a possibility of mis-displaying. So I figure I'd better just send this E-mail in order to inform the developers. Thanks.

removing primary ip address on ospf interface
by Martin Kraus 08 May '09

08 May '09

hi. what happens to bird when you remove a primary ip address on an ospf interface? it seems that bird crashes. all i can find in log is nl_get_reply: Ignoring out of sequence netlink packet (7189e0 != 7189e1) and then some ospf and kernel route messages and then bird starting 6 minutes later when my colegue managed to log into the router and start it. anyone got a similar problem? is it a problem with bird or is it just stupid to remove a primare ip address on an ospf interface? thank mk

How to configure Stub Cost Num?
by ChuYinsu 06 May '09

06 May '09

Hi, I noticed this in the User's Guide: stub cost num No external (except default) routes are flooded into stub areas. Setting this value marks area stub with defined cost of default route. Default value is no. (Area is not stub.) It says the default value is NO, so what does this mean? For example, if the area is not a stub one, how should I configure the stub cost value? Is it "stub cost no", or "stub cost 0", or just ignore this configuration? Thanks!

New release - 1.0.14
by Ondrej Filip 28 Apr '09

28 Apr '09

Hi Folks, Ondrej Zajicek did a very good job and I can announce, that new release of BIRD is available: o A lot of bugfixes in BGP, OSPF and core. o A bugfix in filters in the pipe protocol. It is recommended to check whether the new behavior of used pipe filters is consistent with expectations. o Reimplementation of prefix sets and a slight change in the meaning of some prefix set patterns. Test it, let us know, how do you like it! Ondrej

Does BIRD support multiple processes?
by ChuYinsu 28 Apr '09

28 Apr '09

Hi, I want to do some experiment and study about OSPF protocol. Here is a simple topology: +------+ +------+ | RT1 | Interface 1 | RT2 | | |----------------------------------------| | +------+ Interface 2 +------+ However I just have one computer, so I wondered can I simulate 2 routers on one computer? Using each Ethernet Interface for one router: +-------------+Interface 1 | RT1 |-------------------------- | | | |---------------| | | RT2 |-------------------------- | |Interface 2 +-------------+ If BIRD supports multiple processes running, maybe this simulation would be possible. But when I try to do this, the operating system says another BIRD is already running. Any ideas? Thanks!
