several questions and possible(?) bugs

Hello! I'm beginner with BIRD and need some help. And sorry for bad English.. :) If you can help me with only part of questions, please, do it :) I have FreeBSD station with interface em0 (and others), which acts as router. ______________________________________________________________________________ ifconfig em0 em0: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 options=3<RXCSUM,TXCSUM> inet 81.1.226.1 netmask 0xffffff80 broadcast 81.1.226.127 inet 192.168.0.1 netmask 0xfffff000 broadcast 192.168.15.255 ______________________________________________________________________________ and I need to broad/multicast through it three mentioned RIPv2 routes I created config: _____________________________________________________________________________ log "tmp" all; table testable; debug protocols all; protocol static { table testable; debug all; import all; # from the protocol to the routing table export none; route 0.0.0.0/0 via "em0"; route 81.1.226.0/23 via "em0"; route 192.168.0.0/16 via "em0"; } protocol rip RIP { # You can also use an explicit name table testable; export all; import none; debug all; port 520; period 10; interface "em0" { mode broadcast; }; honor never; authentication none; } protocol device { scan time 60; # Scan interfaces every 10 seconds } ______________________________________________________________________________ Questions: 1) I have two aliased IPs on em0, so I need to send broadcast to 81.1.226.127 and 192.168.15.255 both (my third-party MS-windows client doesn't understand multicast). tethereal -i em0 port 520 Capturing on em0 0.000000 81.1.226.1 -> 81.1.226.127 RIPv2 Response 0.000002 81.1.226.1 -> 81.1.226.127 RIPv2 Response 0.000590 81.1.226.1 -> 81.1.226.127 RIPv2 Response How can I make BIRD to send packet to both 81.1.226.127 and 192.168.15.255? And why there are three packets, not just one? 2) Then, I have "period 10" in config, but in the BIRD's log "says" about 2-7 seconds ______________________________________________________________________________ 10-08-2004 23:18:34 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:18:38 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:18:41 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:18:48 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:18:50 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:18:56 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:19:03 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:19:07 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 10-08-2004 23:19:09 <TRACE> RIP: Broadcasting routing table to em0 ______________________________________________________________________________ at the same time dump says about ~28 seconds. Bird-1.0.9 vs Quagga (ex zebra) in a OSPF network
by Damjan 10 Aug '04

My network has several Cisco routers, several Linux routers and my workstation is on the same network. The Linux routers have Quagga installed, but on my computer I test both wiht Bird and Quagga. The problem is that Quagga receives all he routes published by the Cisco routers, while Bird doesn't. Even more interesting, from two Cisco routers bird doesn't receive any routes, but from one of the Ciscos bird receives 65 routes while Quagga receives 87 routes. -- damjan | дамјан This is my jabber ID --> damjan(a)bagra.net.mk <-- not my mail address!!!

Two BGP instances
by Damjan 08 Aug '04

08 Aug '04

Hi, I have Bird running BGP with two peers, and I have two "static" protocols with several routes in them. This is abbreviaded example: protocol static pool1 { routes... } protocol static pool2 { otherroutes... } protocol bgp bgp1 { ...BGP setup for peer1... } protocol bgp bgp2 { ...BGP setup for peer2... } Now I have two questions... Q1: I tried to put pool1 and bgp1 in a separate bird route table, by adding "table table1;" in them, and pool2 and bgp2 in table2. But with that config it seems Bird didn't anounce anything via BGP. Q2: Even better would be if I could make a filter, in the BGP protocols, to find out which static protocol the route has come from, so that I can bgp_path.prepend my AS on routes from pool1 going out to peer2, and on routes from pool2 going out to peer1. But I don't know how to make the condition? if source = "pool1" ? -- damjan | дамјан This is my jabber ID --> damjan(a)bagra.net.mk <-- not my mail address!!!

Both IPv4 and IPv6 at the same time?
by Jacek Konieczny 04 Aug '04

04 Aug '04

I would like to switch to bird (instead of zebra/quagga), but it has one annoying feature: it may be compiled for IPv4 or IPv6, not both. And I need both. Are there any plans to resolve this issue? Or maybe both versions may be used together as two separate binaries? However, that will probably break when multicast routing is in (Linux doesn't like two multicast routing daemons at the same time). Greets, Jacek

question about v. 1.0.9 spec file
by Loschyov Oleg 27 Jul '04

27 Jul '04

Hello Everybody. I have some difficulties in disabling IPv6 support for bird-1.0.9-rpm. Of course it`s easy to edit /etc/init.d/bird script to disable starting bird6 startup. But I`m interesting in 100 % disabling IPv6 support in bird (a bit maniac) So first of all, I`ve corrected %build section in bird.spec from: ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --enable-ipv6 to: ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var and after that the final %build section looks like that ./configure runs twice with the same options. Is it necessary? May be it`s quite enough to run ./configure only once Next, in %install section i see: %install 1. rm -rf $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/* 2. make install prefix=$RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr sysconfdir=$RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc localstatedir=$RPM_BUILD_ROOT/var 3. install bird6 $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/usr/sbin 4. cd $RPM_BUILD_ROOT 5. install -d etc/rc.d/init.d 6. install $RPM_SOURCE_DIR/bird.init etc/rc.d/init.d/bird 7. install $RPM_SOURCE_DIR/birdc6 usr/sbin/birdc6 So I comment out 3-rd & 7-th lines, and in %files section I see 2 lines with setting up attributes for bird6 & birdc6. (I`ve disabled them too). Am I correct?

bird 100% load
by Adam Pribyl 21 Jul '04

I am triing to use bird 1.0.7, in my linux distribution based on uClibc, as routing daemon in network where neigbours are serviced by zebra (quagga). After few second after bird starts it consumes cpu runtime to nearly 100%. This seems to last forever. From debug messages I do not see anything unusuall to happen. Most values is set to default. I am using only protocols static and ospf. It also seems quagga's ospfd has some troubles comunicate to bird and crashes sometime, but this is not confirmed. Any ideas? Adam Pribyl

RE: Release 1.0.9

Hi all. It seems, that bird 1.0.8 anf 1.0.9 has some memory leak. I use only RIP and I see something like this: root@netserver:~# ps axu | grep bird root 154 0.0 26.7 17788 16768 ? Ss Jul15 0:02 /usr/sbin/bird root@netserver:~# kill 154 root@netserver:~# root@netserver:~# bird root@netserver:~# ps axu | grep bird root 855 0.0 0.9 1608 584 ? Ss 08:54 0:00 bird root@netserver:~# root@netserver:~# ps axu | grep bird root 855 0.0 1.7 2140 1124 ? Ss 08:54 0:00 bird root@netserver:~# I've tried 3 version of bird on 3 differet machines, results was the same :-(. As You can see memory usage is growing ... On one my machine it was 114M today :-(. In my "old" and stable router I use bird-1.0.7 and it is not growing. Here is one my config: log "/var/log/bird.log" { fatal }; #log "/var/log/bird.log" { debug, trace, info, remote, warning, error, auth, fatal, bug }; # Override router ID, backbone IP ... router id 217.29.81.92; filter drop_suckers { if net != 0.0.0.0/0 then { if from = 217.29.80.1 then accept; else reject; } else reject; } protocol direct { # interface "-eth*", "*"; # Restrict network interfaces it works with } protocol kernel { learn; # Learn all alien routes from the kernel # persist; # Don't remove routes on bird shutdown scan time 20; # Scan kernel routing table every 20 seconds # import none; # Default is import all import filter drop_suckers; export filter drop_suckers; } protocol device { scan time 10; # Scan interfaces every 10 seconds } # RIP aka Rest In Pieces... protocol rip TestRIP { # You can also use an explicit name disabled off; # debug all; port 520; infinity 16; garbage time 60; interface "eth0" { mode quiet; }; honor neighbor; # To whom do we agree to send the routing table honor always; honor never; authentication none; # export filter drop_suckers; # import filter drop_suckers; # export all; }

RE: Release 1.0.9
by Zharovtsev, Anton 16 Jul '04

I have seen usual information in /tmp/dump.file but nothin new for me. Afte "dump resources" command nothin changes. I have recompiled bird-1.0.9 once moor and it does not grow anymore ... Strange :-( I have backup of "growing" binaries but they does not grow anymoor too ... I only can suspect that there was "enemy" packets in our network which makes bird to grow in memory. Nothings comes in my head... We have a one big ethernet segment with several different ip subnets, all of them may have or may not their own RIP And my bird hears it every time. Tcpdump tells me about our net-tresh but can not do monitoring my net every time. Situation: I have 4 routers. Two of them was configured long time ago and I did not use filters for them, I limit receive RIP packets by iptables from One "trusted" host (there are several misconfigured routers in our net which send wrong RIPs to my machines). The third router I have Installed 3 days ago, I used filter to drop routes coming not from trusted host. 4-th machine is my experimental, I chech filters on in, Some patches and so on. Here is filter: filter drop_suckers { if net != 0.0.0.0/0 then { if from = 217.29.80.1 then accept; else reject; } else reject; } 3 and 4 machines had growing bird-1.0.8 and 1.0.9. On 1 and 2 stands bird-1.0.7 whithout filters and whith firewall. Maybe birds whith Filter gets some packets and gets memory leak ? I have discribed here 4 machines which have mainly the same configs whith little difference - routers ID and filters. Now I don't know any reason why bird was growing ... Becouse it stops growing. I steel can not make bird to do "dump resource" :-). On Fri, 16 Jul 2004, Zharovtsev, Anton wrote: > The birdc command "dump resource" gets nothing in output: > > root@wasp:/usr/sbin# birdc -v > 0001 BIRD 1.0.9 ready. > bird> dump resources > bird> > bird> quit > root@wasp:/usr/sbin# > > > May be I need find some dump files after this command ? > Or what I do wrong ? Use the config option log: log "/tmp/dump.file" all; The output of the dump will be there. OF
