Parse error with OSPF area stmt?
by James A. Crippen 06 Jan '01

06 Jan '01

I'm getting consistent parse errors from bird while trying to configure ospf. I say something akin to the following: protocol ospf { ... area 0.0.0.0 { ... }; } And I've tried variations like "area 0 {" and "area {", but no luck with anything. I always get a parse error from bird on that particular line. I took a halfhearted look at the source and couldn't find anything in particular. Help! And yes, I know that areas are somewhat borken, that you can't use more than one. I'm not trying to, I'm just trying to follow the documentation which says to list an area section and put my chosen interfaces inside of it. Thanks 'james -- James A. OSPF "bad hello packet"
by James A. Crippen 06 Jan '01

06 Jan '01

I'm getting "bad hello packet from 10.1.1.23 received: bad netmask 255.255.255.0" even though there's really nothing wrong with this netmask (I'm using 10.1.1.0/24 and 10.2.2.0/24 for some testing). Is there any reason why ospf thinks this is a bad netmask? Should I just ignore it? Thanks! 'james -- James A. Crippen <james(a)unlambda.com> ,-./-. Is this a typo

Line 64 in CLI.c if (!(o = c->tx_write) || o->wpos + size > o->end) isnt that should be if (!(o == c->tx_write) || o->wpos + size > o->end) BTW, is there anyone who is also interested in studying the source code? I would be very interested if we could form a study group or something else? Thanx!

Stop forking
by James A. Crippen 02 Jan '01

02 Jan '01

Where should I look to find the code that forks bird into the background on startup? I don't want it to fork. Instead I want to fork it into the background myself from another program. Not exactly sure what to expect though, and I haven't had the time to examine the source closely for what I want. Right now I'm having problems with RIP, but I'm betting that it's my fault and I've misconfigured things again. Maybe I should actually sit down and RTFM... :) If I do find what I want and need to hack on the code I'll be sure to send a patch to the list. 'james -- James A. Broadcasts not broadcasting?
by James A. Crippen 30 Dec '00

30 Dec '00

I'm using bird 1.0.4 on an Intel Linux box (homemade distro). I've configured bird to do RIP broadcast. I then plugged the system into my local network and into a separate network and did the same with my desktop system. I configured bird to dump lots of debug info to the syslog, and I see it say that it broadcasts its routing table to both eth0 and eth1, but watching either network shows me absolutely no traffic from either interface. I pinged back and forth to be sure, and I can see the pings and the associated ARP traffic quite clearly, but no RIP broadcasts at all. The configuration is as simple as possible. From what I can tell from the manual I've got everything necessary to make RIP run, but it doesn't want to share its routes with anyone. Any ideas about what might be malfunctioning? Below is the configuration file I'm using. ---8<--- cut here ---8<--- log syslog all; debug protocols all; protocol direct { interface "*"; } protocol kernel { learn yes; persist no; scan time 20; import all; export all; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol static { debug all; } protocol rip { debug all; honor always; authentication none; interface "*" { mode broadcast; }; } -- James A. bird 1.0.4: Segmentation fault
by Michael Renzmann 29 Dec '00

29 Dec '00

Hi all. I just detected a segmentation fault. It is reproducable by doing the following: 1. start bird with "bird -c /etc/bird/bird.conf -d" on one console. it prints: --- cut --- exporting (rip) exporting (rip) --- cut --- 2. type "killall bird" on another console 3. bird on first console prints: --- cut --- exporting (rip) Segmentation fault --- cut --- That "exporting (rip)" has been added by configuration in cases it exports a route out of the kernel table to rip protocol (see configuration file for that, which has been attached to my mail). I compiled bird 1.0.4 (stable tarball from bird.network.cz) using 2.95.2. ./configure was started with "--with-protocols=rip,static" afair. Kernel is a patched 2.2.17, I added the crypto10 and the stealth patches to it. My machine is an Intel Celeron 466 running with 64 Megs RAM. Distribution is Debian 2.2. The two routes that exist on the system are: 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.210 default via 192.168.1.30 dev eth0 What should I do to track down the bug? Bye, Mike

New user, initial question
by Michael Renzmann 29 Dec '00

29 Dec '00

Hi all. I just want to introduce myself as a new bird user here on the list and have an initial question: how stable is the RIP module of the current bird release? I would like to use bird as routing daemon within one product we are developing. We used zebra since a few months, but there have been some problems with it that couln't be solved, and as the time is getting shorter and shorter (we have to start tests soon) I started looking around for another routing daemon. So I came around to bird (via freshmeat) and was impressed by the good documentation (at least the few parts I have read by now are good... :)) ) and would like to start working with the bird now. The product I work on is a router for wireless networks running under Linux in an (slightly) embedded system. We use RIPv2 for the beginning, but would also like to enable them to use OSPF in one of the next steps. Current protocol is IPv4, IPv6 will also come in a later step. Is there anything I should pay attention for when using the RIPv2 part of bird? Any pitfalls, stability problems, ...? Is there a mailing list archive available? Bye, Mike

Large scale deployment ?
by Mario Lorenz 14 Dec '00

14 Dec '00

Hi there, I would like to ask on whether bird is actually used in medium-sized production environments and what the experiences are, with regard to stability and possibilities for debugging, especially on the OSPF and BGP parts. Since I am only learning said more complex routing protocols (until now everything that needed to be done could be handled with static routing or RIP) I wonder if BIRD is a good platform to use. Compared to eg. Cisco or Zebra, the possibilities of getting BGP status information (paths etc) seem to be rather limited. Anyone running BGP on a network consisting of more than just a single box, and running full internet tables ? How How does BIRD do there, since route dampening is on the todo, and the books describe it as a very important feature for an internet grade BGP router ? OSPF I couldnt test at all, bird just crashes right after startup (probably my config file describes an invalid configuration). Again, can BIRD be recommended as a routing solution for single area OSPF networks, around 20-30 Routers ? Scaling for more areas? Interoperability with other vendors tested ? Again, the idea for me is to learn the routing protocols, on a practical example; I dont have 20 Ciscos to play with, and bird looked like a nice little daemon for that job (and also for future deployment, if it works..) Or any other suggestions ? (Replies to this question please in private, as I dont want to start any flame wars here) Regards, Mario -- Mario Lorenz Internet: <ml(a)vdazone.org> Ham Radio: DL5MLO@OK0PKL.#BOH.CZE.EU Trust the computer industry to shorten "Year 2000" to Y2K.
