Unable to open rtnetlink socket
by Christian Lyra 25 Nov '01

Hi all, I'm trying to use bird as a BGP peer, but although I could compile/install it I couldnt run. I got the " Unable to open rtnetlink socket" error and can't go on. I looked for errors on bird.conf, but it seems to be ok. I couldnt find a FAQ so I'm asking for your help. What's wrong? BTW, I'm using bird-1.0.5 Thanks in advance Christian Lyra

Problems w/IPv6 router address
by aardvark＠vcn.bc.ca 03 Aug '01

Hi there...I'm trying to build an IPv6 tunnel broker in Linux using bird as a routing daemon, and I'm running into trouble. Right now I'm just trying to make sure that I can add IPv6 tunnels/devices manually, and I keep getting the error "Router IDs must be entered as hexadecimal numbers or IPv4 addresses in IPv6 version". I've tried adding addresses in these forms: router id 3ffe:1200:3028:ff01:0000:0000:0000:124e; router id 3ffe12003028ff01000000000000124e; router id 0x3ffe12003028ff01000000000000124e; What am I missing? -- St Aardvark the Carpeted http://www.saintaardvarkthecarpeted.com Because the plural of Anecdote is Myth.

BGP-4 questions
by Katia Linker 01 Jul '01

Hello, all ! I have some questions regards BGP-4: 1. how we're supposed to configure the Multi-Exit Discriminator? where are we knowing from which link it is better to use ? 2. how we're supposed to calculate the Local-prefernce? is there any formula for that ? 3. when it is important to use third party next hop ? Thanks in advance Katya

Routing incoming traffic based on BGP routes
by Jeremy Malcolm 23 Jun '01

I am trying to use bird to differentiate between peering traffic (which has a certain AS in its BGP path) and non-peering traffic. I want to use a different gateway for (incoming and outgoing) peering traffic than I use for non-peering traffic. I can get it to work for outgoing traffic but not incoming. My filter changes the gateway for peering and local outgoing traffic so that I can distinguish them from non-peering outgoing traffic. I am not sure how to do a similar thing for incoming traffic. How could I determine whether incoming traffic is coming from an address within the peering AS or from outside? Here is my bird.conf: protocol direct { interface "-eth*", "*"; # So I can manually route incoming } protocol kernel { ...snip... protocol device { ...snip... filter waix { if bgp_path ~ / ? 7606 ? / then { # peering traffic gw = 203.25.143.3; accept; } else { # local traffic, including incoming and my upstream if bgp_path ~ / ? 7635 ? / then gw = 203.25.143.2; # This line # is supposed to do the trick by checking for traffic to a local # interface but which has my AS in it which must therefore be incoming # traffic from an external source. But it doesn't seem to work...? else gw = 203.25.143.3; accept; } } protocol static { route 203.25.143.0/24 via 203.25.143.254; # Local traffic # to local interfaces should use this route, instead of the BGP one? } protocol bgp { local as 7635; neighbor 198.32.212.9 as 7635; multihop 20 via 203.25.143.254; disable after error; # Drop back to static routing if errors source address 203.25.143.1; import filter waix; } I'm new at this so I'm not sure what other information is needed for people to make suggestions, please let me know if I've left out anything important. possible bug
by Luben Karavelov 22 Jun '01

22 Jun '01

hello, I am using bird as bgp router and I have found a possible severe bug, that may not be limited only to the bgp functionality. if the router state machine is in state "feed" and the bgp peer drops the connection (I think that this is the reason, because it is reproducable) the bird daemon dies in /lib/io.c at line 976: if (connect(s->fd, (struct sockaddr *) &sa, sizeof(sa)) >= 0) sk_tcp_connected(s); > else if (errno != EINTR && errno != EAGAIN && errno != EINPROGRESS) s->err_hook(s, errno); because errno == EBADF. I am not a skilled C programmer, so I can't fix this issue. I have found it in 1.0.4 but this bug is in 1.0.5 also. I hope to be helpfull to somebody that knows how to fix it. Why write X windows when you could integrate them in kernel (like winNT do)? a) portability b) crash-proofness c) bird is swappable d) bird can use libc e) bird is preemptibly-scheduled. If it loops, nothing bad happens. Pavel -- I'm pavel(a)ucw.cz. "In my country we have almost anarchy and I don't care." Panos Katsaloulis describing me w.r.t. patents at discuss(a)linmodems.org

Why userspace rather than writing kernel space modules?
by Daniel Holmlund 11 Jun '01

11 Jun '01

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie to BIRD who ran across it from freshmeat.net. Being a newbie, I have some newbie questions. How efficient is it to sync with kernel space routing tables if the routing tables change rapidly? How often does a routing table change with a typical server configuration and typical server traffic? Lastly besides the portability, why implement a userspace daemon that is required to sync with the kernel when kernel space modules could be written to directly manipulate the routing tables themselves? Thanks for answering these questions. Currently, I am EXTREMELY interested in this project, and would like to potentially put some development time into BIRD. Daniel Holmlund --
