Re: BIRD & production BGP? -- Thanks

Hello all. Thanks for the replies to my question -- not seeing nearly as much traffic here as on the Zebra list, I was concerned that no-one was using it in a production environment. Does anyone have an opinion on how Bird compares to Zebra? And as far as developer support, the Bird team seems fairly small (but quite competent). Are issues dealt with well, or is it a self supported type arrangement? I'm comfortable programming and debugging in C, but it would be nice to know there's a good support network as well. And considering one of the machines we're proposing to use this on will be quite some distance away, we'd obviously like to have a stable system. Puzzling behaviour from bird ospf
by Harry Moyes 14 Jul '03

14 Jul '03

Martin, List I'm experimenting with a modest network of three linux based routers. Each router has an 100bT Ethernet port, and a prism based wi-fi interface using HostAP. All Ethernet ports connect to a common switch. There is also a firewall box connected to the switch, not exchanging routes with the network under test. Running RIP bird distributes routes around this network very predictably. However I'm having problems with moving the network over to OSPF. I'm uncertain if my problems are misconfiguration, an external problem, or a bug in bird. I'm very much a beginner with OSPF so it's entirely possible that I'm missing something obvious. Help would be very much appreciated. If I start up bird on the routers, a normal OSPF election takes place and routes are distributed as I expect. However if I leave the set up for a few minutes the non local routes start to disappear from the routers. Around the same time the non dr routers start complaining 22:54:08 <DBG> ShokaOSPF: Bad OSPF hello packet from 172.16.1.50 received: hello interval mismatch. I've tried a whole string of config file settings, but the following traces were taken with the ospf settings defaulted as far as possible. The output from the three routers is reported below, with basic interface details and a copy of the config file used on all three routers. My mailer seems to have wrapped the longer lines in the logs. If this is inconvenient I can supply the same data as a plain text file. A possibly related problem is that if I leave the routers running overnight, birdc is unable to connect to bird on some of the boxes. I've not been able to determine a pattern, but AFAICT the dr is never showing this problem. Regards Harry Moyes First Router output ************************************************************** [root@pei root]# /usr/local/sbin/bird 08-10-2003 22:42:02 <INFO> Guessed router ID 172.16.1.40 according to interface eth0 [root@pei root]# /usr/local/sbin/birdc BIRD 1.0.6 ready. bird> s o n ShokaOSPF: Router ID Pri State DTime Router IP Interface 172.16.1.50 1 2way/other 00:37 172.16.1.50 eth0 172.16.1.20 1 2way/other 00:38 172.16.1.20 eth0 bird> s r 0.0.0.0/0 via 172.16.1.1 on eth0 [static1 22:42] (200) 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.4.128/25 dev wlan0 [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.1.0/24 dev eth0 [direct1 22:42] (240) bird> show ospf neighbors ShokaOSPF: Router ID Pri State DTime Router IP Interface 172.16.1.50 1 full/dr 00:38 172.16.1.50 eth0 172.16.1.20 1 full/other 00:38 172.16.1.20 eth0 bird> show route 0.0.0.0/0 via 172.16.1.1 on eth0 [static1 22:42] (200) 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.4.128/25 dev wlan0 [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.5.128/25 via 172.16.1.50 on eth0 [ShokaOSPF 22:43] I (150/20) 172.16.1.0/24 dev eth0 [direct1 22:42] (240) via 172.16.1.50 on eth0 [ShokaOSPF 22:43] I (150/10) 172.16.2.128/25 via 172.16.1.20 on eth0 [ShokaOSPF 22:43] I (150/20) bird> show route 0.0.0.0/0 via 172.16.1.1 on eth0 [static1 22:42] (200) 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.4.128/25 dev wlan0 [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.1.0/24 dev eth0 [direct1 22:42] (240) bird> show ospf neighbors ShokaOSPF: Router ID Pri State DTime Router IP Interface 172.16.1.50 1 init/other 00:31 172.16.1.50 eth0 172.16.1.20 1 init/other 00:37 172.16.1.20 eth0 bird> show ospf neighbors ShokaOSPF: Router ID Pri State DTime Router IP Interface 172.16.1.20 1 init/other 00:30 172.16.1.20 eth0 172.16.1.50 1 init/other 00:39 172.16.1.50 eth0 bird> show route 0.0.0.0/0 via 172.16.1.1 on eth0 [static1 22:42] (200) 127.0.0.0/8 dev lo [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.4.128/25 dev wlan0 [direct1 22:42] (240) 172.16.1.0/24 dev eth0 [direct1 22:42] (240) bird> 08-10-2003 22:53:20 <DBG> ShokaOSPF: Bad OSPF hello packet from 172.16.1.50 received: hello interval mismatch. 08-10-2003 22:53:41 <DBG> ShokaOSPF: Bad OSPF hello packet from 172.16.1.50

local route disappearing
by Eric Leblond 12 Jul '03

Hi, I experiment strange behaviour (too, sorry I don't know OSPF) when using BGP. On one of my router I loose the interface route of one ethernet interface. It is used to a BGP connection : R1 - ethernet - R2 It seems that we've got the following phenomenom : - R2 send the interface route to R1 - bird on R1 put this route in the main table destroying the interface route. - bird on R1 detect that there's no route to R2 and stop the session (Netlink message) The configuration is symetric, R2 used also bird. There's no problem on R2, so the problem has to come from the difference in the configuration. R2 works with main table and R2 works with different table. Here's a : show protocols name proto table state since info kernel1 Kernel MAIN up Jul11 device1 Device MAIN up Jul11 direct1 Direct master up Jul11 static1 Static MAIN up Jul11 static2 Static ADSL up Jul11 pipe3 Pipe ADSL up Jul11 -> MAIN bgp1 BGP MAIN up Jul11 Established bgp2 BGP ADSL up Jul11 Established bgp3 BGP MAIN up Jul11 Established The configuration ot the pipe is : protocol pipe { table ADSL; peer table MAIN; import filter pas_nos_ips; export filter pas_nos_ips; } I can provide the complete conf if this explanation is not enough. Success, and thanks
by Harry Moyes 30 Jun '03

30 Jun '03

All Just a small success report, I've compiled and installed bird 1.06 on a half dozen or so RedHat 8.0 and 9.0 boxes. I'm only using it for RIP at present, will try OSPF shortly. I've integrated it into the RH startup scripts OK, but would like to script birdc to do shutdown and reloads in the usual RH standard init scripts. Is there some way to pipe commands into birdc that I'm missing? If not, if I hacked birdc to accept command input, would this be of general interest ?. (make no mistake, I'm not up to coding OSPF for IPv6 ;-) simple hackery only envisaged.) My compliments on a very nicely designed and documented project. Harry

Hi all, The BIRD looks very nice.. Does the BIRD is ready for production use? Does anyone is using it in 'real' networks? Does anyone has a mailing list archive ? Thanks, Bram.

RIP authentication problem with cisco
by Eric Leblond 16 Apr '03

16 Apr '03

Hello, It seems that the auth type message field is not correctly send. bird send it in host order but other routers (like cisco) wants it in network order. So it is necessary to change the file auth.c (in proto/rip/) at line 132 : block->authtype = P_CF->authtype; become : block->authtype = htons(P_CF->authtype); This was tested with 1.0.4 but the rip related files have not changed in 1.0.5. BIRD 1.0.6 released
by Martin Mares 06 Apr '03

06 Apr '03

Hi folks, after a long silence I've finally released bird-1.0.6. This release includes all bug fixes gathered since 1.0.5, especially interoperability fixes for IPv6 BGP and for RIP authentication. You'll find it at the usual places. It also seems I'll have more time for developing BIRD in the future, so if you have any ideas, let me (or better the whole list) know. Have a nice fortnight -- Martin `MJ' Mares <mj(a)ucw.cz> http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mj/ Faculty of Math and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Rep., Earth If at first you don't succeed, redefine success.

export all

I have the following configuration (testing for now): ... protocol direct { table testtable; interface "gre1"; } protocol kernel { table testtable; kernel table 200; export all; } /* Some other ospf configuration */ ... Then, we get: # birdc BIRD 1.0.5 ready. bird> show route table testtable 192.168.0.0/30 dev gre1 [direct1 18:36] (240) 192.168.4.0/24 via 192.168.1.2 on gre2 [testOSPF 18:46] I (150/30) bird> Great, that is what we want. On the other end: # ip route list table 200 192.168.4.0/24 via 192.168.1.2 dev gre1 proto bird # The ospf stuff has been exported, not the rest... Any reason? Guillaume.
