Re: BGP anouncing with two peers.
by Damjan 24 Dec '01

> > Please, if you get the answers, could you send me a copy ? Hello, I've succeded in making Bird BGP work. I'm now using it to anounce my ISP's ip address pool to the world, through two peers. Also I prepend the routes I anounce so part of my IP's are routed through one peer, and the other part through the other peer. Curently I'm only anouncing (exporting) BGP routes, I don't import nothing. Next thing I'll do is try to manipulate my router's two routing tables when a BGP session is broken, so that I can get automatic switchover of the uplink too. This will require a different Bird configuation and I'll do it once I get more familiar with Bird's scripting language. This is the configuration I used, atached. If you have any questions feel free to ask me. -- Damjan Georgievski | Дамјан Георгиевски Skopje, Macedonia | Скопје, Македонија

How to use bgp_next_hop
by Christian Lyra 17 Dec '01

17 Dec '01

Hi all I'm using bird to receive full route from one AS (A) and export to another AS (B). But I need to change the the next_hop information so the routers at the AS B send his packets to my router and not to my bird machine. I tried something like filter export { bgp_next_hop.add(xxx.yyy.zzz.www); accept; }; but didnt work... the daemon dies after a few seconds! thanks in advance! Christian Lyra

OSPF bug?
by Mark Glines 07 Dec '01

07 Dec '01

Hi! We've been attempting to use bird 1.0.5 on our test network, but OSPF didn't seem to be propogating correctly. Rather, it was talking amongst its peer routers properly, and propogating routes correctly, but forgetting to set the gateways (which kinda defeats the purpose). For instance, we have one machine (test1, 192.168.0.254) which is directly attached to 192.168.0.0/24 (obviously) and 192.168.1.0/24, as well as our uplink to the internet. Another machine (192.168.0.60) is directly attached to 192.168.0.0/24 (obviously), 192.168.4.0/24 and 192.168.7.0/24. Once they had flooded LS's and entered OSPF "full" mode with eachother, test1's routing table looked like: test1:~# ip route XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/27 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX 192.168.7.0/24 dev eth2 proto bird 192.168.4.0/24 dev eth2 proto bird 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.254 192.168.0.0/24 dev eth2 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.254 default via XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX dev eth0 proto bird I rooted around in the source for a while, and managed to make it work. Attached is the patch (which also includes a small documentation fix). This patch makes bird set gateways properly: test1:~# ip route XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/27 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX 192.168.7.0/24 via 192.168.0.60 dev eth2 proto bird 192.168.4.0/24 via 192.168.0.60 dev eth2 proto bird 192.168.1.0/24 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.254 192.168.0.0/24 dev eth2 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.254 default via XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX dev eth0 proto bird Since this seems like such a silly bug and is so unlikely to be overlooked (because it rendered bird's OSPF mostly useless), I have to ask if we configured something wrong, or managed to mess something else up. Please also find attached one of our config files (they all look pretty similar to this). What happened? I'd love to hear your comments. Thanks for your time, Mark

BGP anouncing with two peers.
by Damjan 26 Nov '01

26 Nov '01

Hello all, I want to setup BIRD to anounce BGP routes for my AS. We have two backbone providers so I'll need to make two BGP connections. I only need to anounce routes and don't want to import them. I also want on the second BGP conection to prepend our AS several times, so this route should be less prefered. I have worked out a draft bird configuratioan, but some things are unclear to me. ## bird.conf ## protocol bgp one { local as 65333; # our AS (let say it is) neighbor peer.one.ip as [theiras]; # peer one and their AS multihop 20 via my.next.hop.ip; # not directly connected import none; export ; # this part is not clear to me # I want to export my whole a.b.c.d/19 # network. What do I put here. source address x.y.z.w; # The IP address of my router } protocol bgp one { local as 65333; # our AS (let say it is) neighbor peer.two.ip as [theiras]; # peer two and their AS multihop 20 via my.next.hop.ip; # not directly connected import none; export ; # Same thing as above, but prepend our AS # several times, so this route is less # prefered source address x.y.z.w; # The IP address of my router } -- Damjan Georgievski | Дамјан Георгиевски Skopje, Macedonia | Скопје, Македонија

RIP problem
by Jiri Hubert - Europe 26 Nov '01

26 Nov '01

Hallo everybody, I've installed BIRD on our linux router. I'm using it only with RIP/RIP2. In ROUTE command I see routing entries added by BIRD and directly from router everything works perfect. But I can not reach routed networks from other machines. Why? I'm using kernel 2.4.9 and iptables. I've tried instal routed instead of BIRD and it works good. Thanks for any response Jiri
