simple config for exchanging static routes via BGP between two ho sts
by Johnson, John M. III 18 Sep '03

18 Sep '03

I am trying to setup a simple test of exchanging routing tables between two hosts. I have two static routes (one on each host) and I want BGP to advertise these routes to its peer. I will be damned if I can figure out this simple configuration. Can someone help me out? Here is the big picture. I will have a machine in about 6 states across the nation. They will all be advertising the same IP (used for out bound SMTP service) that I want to inject to the BGP tables for the network. This will allow me to have regional SMTP servers and off load a lot of work from my central SMTP farm. Anyway, to make a long story short, if one of the boxes dies, its BGP advertisement will also go away (funny how that works huh?). This will cause BGP to reconverge and direct traffic to the next nearest SMTP server. I am just trying to get started w/ the bird config and could use a little help. Thanks John M. Johnson

OSPF endianess fix
by Rani Assaf 14 Sep '03

Hello, The attached patch fixes two (big-)endianess issues in OSPF which lead bird to stuck in EXSTART state. Patch tested on a PPC machine against a Cisco router. PATCH for correcting autype sequence
by Sörös József 14 Sep '03

14 Sep '03

Hi, Authentication type simple does not work, because bird sends 256 instead of 1 in auth type field. The reason is the wrong byte order. I suggest these corrections in proto/ospf/packet.c to fix this. lowering OSPF memory requirements
by Jack Culpepper 09 Sep '03

09 Sep '03

Hi all, I am trying to use bird's OSPF implementation in a memory contrained linux environment. I have only 2 MB of RAM. Can you give me some tips on how to reduce the memory footprint of bird running OSPF? It is currently using about 1 MB, and I would like to try to cut that by 200 KB or so.. FYI, I am running this on a wireless network. Below I have pasted in my bird.conf file. The 8 wlan0wdsX interfaces are point-to-point wireless links (/30 IP networks) that connect repeaters together. Only the ones with cost less than 1000 are connected. These boxes have 1 ethernet and 1 wlan. Thanks, Jack log stderr all; debug protocols all; protocol static { route 0.0.0.0/0 via 10.96.127.82; export all; } protocol kernel { persist; scan time 20; export all; } protocol direct { interface "eth0"; interface "wlan0"; interface "wlan0wds0"; interface "wlan0wds1"; interface "wlan0wds2"; interface "wlan0wds3"; interface "wlan0wds4"; interface "wlan0wds5"; interface "wlan0wds6"; interface "wlan0wds7"; } protocol device { scan time 10; } protocol ospf { export all; import all; area 0.0.0.0 { tick 8; interface "eth0" { cost 1; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0" { cost 5; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds0" { cost 44; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds1" { cost 1000; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds2" { cost 1000; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds3" { cost 1000; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds4" { cost 1000; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds5" { cost 1000; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds6" { cost 1000; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; interface "wlan0wds7" { cost 47; hello 15; priority 100; retransmit 7; authentication simple; password "asdfasdf"; }; }; }

[PATCH] Fix an endless loop in OSPF
by Rani Assaf 04 Sep '03

04 Sep '03

Hi, The attached patch changes the type of "i" in ospf_hello_rx() from "u8" to "u32" to prevent bird from entering an endless loop here: for(i=0;i<size-(sizeof(struct ospf_hello_packet));i++) The problem occurs when: size-(sizeof(struct ospf_hello_packet)) > 255, which is the case when you start to have a lot of neighbors in the area (I triggered this while trying to run bird in an area with more than 60 neighbors). bird-1.0.7
by Damjan 01 Sep '03

I just downloaded bird-1.0.7 and it works great but just a small note. In the file sysdep/config.h its still defined as: #define BIRD_VERSION "1.0.6" also "make distclean" deletes the "./configure" script -- Damjan Georgievski

Both maintains two BGP session : BGP1 BGP2 BGP3 BGP4 | | | | RTR1------iBGP----RTR2 BGP2 and BGP4 announce exactly the same thing and I want local BGP announce (with BGP2 on RTR1 and BGP4 on RTR2) to be choozen. The thing is that I get on RTR1 or RTR2 route choozen in iBGP. I try to prepend my AS to the bgp_path but it changes nothing.
